It’s important to cover everything…

When you look at clothing security for your clothes, chances are good that you will probably not use retail anti-theft devices like cheap labels or cheap tags on every single piece of your inventory. Most retailers spend their time and efforts tagging over a certain price point, or product group, depending upon their shrink results and trends.

That doesn’t mean that you will never find someone stealing an item just because it did not have any tags. I had a recent shoplifting instance where the shoplifter stole a shirt that did not have a clothing security tag.

What was more important was that we missed this suspect stealing a pair of jeans also. When they went out the door with the merchandise, the alarm went off. It wasn’t until later on, in our office, that we discovered our oversight.

The shirt we saw him take did not have a sensor tag on it that would have set off the alarm. We realized that he had to have something else; another piece of our clothing that did have a tag on it.

Without those clothing security tags, we never would have recovered the stolen jeans.

What it takes to win…

I don’t watch much television, but I do have a few TV shows that are a guilty pleasure. One in particular, is a reality series that tests the contestants in sometimes completely bizarre ways. Mentally and physically challenging, the contestants are often asked if they have what it takes to win the competition for fabulous prizes.

Retail clothing security is often no different. Your mind and body are often tasked with an endurance challenge to see who will win- you or the shoplifter. You enter the arena with your skills, your business acumen and the desire to eliminate shoplifting from your retail store.

Now all you need is some tricks of the trade. In this particular contest, what you need to assist you are some retail anti-theft devices. Even better, are cheap labels and cheap tags for you to use with your EAS system.  They will maximize the potential financial return on your investment.

Armed with these skills and tools, you will have a clear-cut advantage to reduce your losses from shoplifters. You can truly rest assured that you really do have what it takes to beat your competition.

The Cost Effective Alternative

Retailers worldwide have felt the impact of the global economic crisis and cost effective asset protection initiatives have been developed to meet the demand. By reducing the rising cost of clothing security, the retail community can pass these savings on to the consumer.  Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) or other high-end technology can become expensive because they require installation, upgrades and constant maintenance.  The asset protection community now understands that clothing security tags are efficient and can deter theft while maintaining a commitment to outstanding customer service.

Placing security tags on clothes requires minimal training and clothing security tags or a clothing alarm can be easily adapted to meet the current and future needs of a merchant.  Clothing security does not adversely impact the commitment to customer service and placing security tags on clothes or using a clothing alarm will not damage the merchandise.  Clothing security tags are a simple and cost effective method to reduce internal and external theft through deterrence.

If you want to reduce company shortage and maintain your commitment to customer service, placing security tags on clothes is an affordable asset protection initiative.  To purchase clothing security tags or a clothing alarm please visit the loss prevention store.

Sometimes, you really do get what you pay for

When you hear somebody use the phrase “you only get what you pay for”, they are all too often talking about a poor quality item they paid for and are mostly regretting. You rarely hear someone say that they spent a ton of money and well, you get what you pay for, it was great!

Don’t let that dissuade you from buying cheap labels and cheap tags for your stores clothing security. In this case the cheap labels and cheap tags are still good quality items that are made by reliable hands here in the United States.

It is true that not all retail anti-theft devices are made equally. Some, often cheap foreign imports really are of a lower quality than what you think you are paying for. It’s easy to be fooled by the lure of a low dollar price tag.

When you are selling clothes that are worth the price a customer is paying for them, it only makes sense that you would find the right combination of price and quality in the tags and labels you put on them.

The Opportunistic Tourist

I do a fair amount of traveling in my free time. Whether I am in and out of airports, or travel stops on the highway, I see the same clothing security breakdowns time and time again.

Often these retailers are in an open area where there is a significant amount of foot traffic. The majority of this foot traffic is also transient in nature, as in all the shoppers are travelers from another city, or state, maybe even another country.

If the retailers have no anti-theft devices like cheap tags or cheap labels on their clothes, it is very easy for someone to slip into the store, take what they want and slip back into the passing crowds of people never to be seen again.

It is an opportunistic nightmare. Most of those shoplifters probably aren’t on their holiday with the intention of finding a place to steal. They saw an opportunity present itself and get the better of them. The key rational is that they will never be back, so no one will notice them.

Keep your eyes peeled for the traveler. They may be trying to take your merchandise on a vacation too.

Bolsters and Boosters…

One of the best known tricks of the trade is to use a bolster or booster bag to shoplift. Some states do have legislation making it a crime to be in possession of or to use a bolster or booster. That doesn’t mean it stops shoplifters from stealing though. Remember, shoplifting is also illegal, and they ignore that one too.

In the simplest terms, bolsters and booster bags may be anything from harnesses, to secret pockets sewn into clothes, to foil lined bags. Each one is designed to attempt to circumvent any retail anti-theft devices you may have in place.

A trained Loss Prevention professional will know how to spot those shoplifting tools, and make sure that the shoplifters are in fact apprehended and prosecuted. These tools can wind up being a thief’s downfall, as they further prove their intent to steal.

Keep your clothing security programs in place and even the most innovative shoplifter who thinks they have a fool proof tool will be thwarted in the end.

Stop your juvenile thieves….

I have had the unfortunate experience of having to apprehend juveniles for shoplifting in my stores. One of the worst times for this always seems to be around the end of the school year with Prom looming in the background. I have caught, more than once, a love struck high school girl trying to steal her clothes and accessories for the prom to impress a young man.

Clothing security is important not only to your bread and butter clothing items, but also in your special occasion areas. The use of retail anti-theft devices may seem unnecessary, but it is really a necessary precaution.  Using cheap labels or cheap tags can help defray the costs of additional retail anti-theft devices just for this time of year.

I know that the instances of theft have decreased each year with the more products we use cheap tags on. I see the girls come in, look at the dresses, take note of the tags and then leave. I even caught a few shoplifters the first year we used the hard tags, who told us how surprised they were to be caught. They had heard from older classmates that this was the place to go because we didn’t have any retail clothing security.

Don’t let your special occasion items slide out the door unpaid for. Protect them like you protect the rest of your merchandise.

EAS can even prevent Employee Theft!

Retail clothing security is generally spoken of in the context of shoplifters. In some stores, the only time you see loss prevention employees is when they have a shoplifter in custody or when they are walking out with the local police department who has taken custody of said shoplifter.

The use of retail anti-theft devices on clothes is rarely thought of as a deterrent for employee theft. When only 20 – 30% of inventory losses are caused by external theft, it’s time to rethink the usefulness of EAS systems. When used for deterring internal theft, the return on your investment in clothing security is ten fold.

Let your EAS live up to it’s fullest potential by protecting your clothes from internal theft.

Good Customer Service is Responding to EAS!

There aren’t many things that make me more proud than to have one of my employees come to me with their news of making a recovery. I am talking about recovering clothes from a potential shoplifter.

Every once in a while, one of my employees will respond to an EAS alarm and get a huge surprise. For example, just the other day a cashier heard the EAS go off and she went to offer assistance to that customer. Well, the lady that set off the alarm was so shocked not only because she missed the retail anti-theft devices on our merchandise, but because someone had come to assist her. Unfortunately, a lot of stores let their cashiers get used to ignoring the EAS system so when a shoplifter is actually stopped because of one it can be a bit of a surprise to them.

She saw the cashier getting closer, and quickly pulled several clothing items out of her purse, threw them at the cashier and ran out the door. The cashier was in total awe and it took her a moment to realize that the clothes had all of our tags still on them. She had no intention of stopping a shoplifter; she was just trying to give good customer service. It was that service that prevented a loss for our store.

The good thing about missed tags…

It’s not an ideal situation, but you’ve got to be kidding yourself if you don’t admit that the occasional security tag on clothes is missed. While we try hard to ensure total accuracy, it can be difficult to be 100% all the time. Fear not, there is a bright side to this situation. Recently while watching cameras in my store I observed a subject with a large bag browsing the denim. What tipped me off that this subject was suspicious was that the subject wasn’t just browsing for the right size or color; they were looking for the pairs that didn’t have checkpoint tags attached. After further observation I observed the subject concealing the merchandise and I was able to apprehend and recover it.

Checkpoint tags are not easy to defeat by the average shoplifter. However everybody knows that as our technology in clothing security advances, so does the professional shoplifter. Yet again, there is a bright side! A few weeks ago two individuals came into my store with bags from another retailer. The subjects began grabbing a large amount of merchandise very quickly and we barely had a chance to clear the fitting rooms before they got in. There was no time to get a detailed list of what they grabbed and they paid no attention to whether of not the merchandise had clothing security tags on it. They must have known a way to remove the tags so that they didn’t set off the clothing alarm at the exit. All we knew was that they went in with about 30 items. When they came out it was tough to know for certain, but their bags seemed a bit larger. We rushed to the fitting room to find it a mess with about half the stuff they went in with. The biggest sign we had to know that they had stolen was the pile of about 10 clothing security tags hidden under some of the merchandise. After apprehending the subjects we were able to recover our merchandise and identify professional shoplifters that had been terrorizing the area for some time.

The ideal situation is for clothing security to protect our merchandise from theft every time. But the bottom line is that everything can be defeated, and the key is to use the flaws of security tags on clothes to your benefit.
