Alpha High Theft Solutions1 Alarm, 2 Alarm & 3 Alarm Devices for Clothing Security

We are frequently asked what the difference is between Alpha Security devices that have 1 Alarm, 2 Alarm and 3 Alarm features. In the Clothing Security world we can use those devices in conjunction with a Clothing Alarm and other clothing security tags. These devices are used for merchandise that we have a more serious theft problem with or that shoplifters have targeted that may not be able to utilize traditional security tags on clothes.

Alpha Security 1 Alarm – These types of Clothing Security tags or devices will only trigger the antennas at the doors. A regular hard tag or label will do this. However, Alpha also has Spider Wraps, Cable Loks and other items that will cause an alarm and can sometimes be more conducive to your packaging needs.

Alpha Security 2 Alarm – A 2 alarm device will do what a 1 alarm device does plus it will “self-alarm”. Self-alarm means that if a shoplifter tries to remove the device by either cutting the cables, prying the device off or damaging it, the device itself will go into alarm. These 2 alarm devices have a built in sounder that produces about 90 dB of sound. That will immediately draw attention to the shoplifter. Normal repeated use by customers and store personnel will not cause an alarm. These devices are very robust.

Alpha Security 3 Alarm – These devices do everything that a 1 and 2 alarm device do plus when the shoplifter tries to leave the property the 3 alarm devices built in sounder, again about 90 dB goes off. The shoplifter then has a choice they can run down the street or mall with this sounder going off, attracting attention to themselves or they can drop the merchandise. The sounder will last up to 10 minutes once the shoplifter passes through the antennas.

These Clothing Security tags are as durable as any Checkpoint Tags or Alpha Clothing Security device. They have excellent construction, solid plastic welds and high quality electronic components. Of course the added benefit is that they are reusable over and over saving you money and labor. Alpha High Theft Solutions are not intended to be for all merchandise. It is clearly more cost effective to use Checkpoint Tags for the bulk of your merchandise. But remember your Clothing Alarm is only as good as the security tags on clothes.

Don’t lose your shirt, use RBC!

Small specialty clothing stores have been the target of many things that are bad for business, the economy, slashed budgets, reduced payroll and opportunistic thieves. The owners of these businesses are frantic and are hanging by a thread attempting to keep their doors open. The inventory losses coming at the tail end of a year of dismal sales due to the slowing economy and reduced payroll was the last facet of the perfect storm. Thieves see the slowing economy as a huge opportunity to pillage businesses that during the good times have retail anti-theft devices and plenty of payroll to ensure good floor coverage.

One particular clothing store that I helped was in dire straits. The owner was on the brink of closing her doors and could not understand why her clothes were walking out the door. A quick observation of her business showed that her lack of payroll and a non functioning checkpoint system were high on the list as to the causes of the shrink. The Checkpoint system was not broken, in fact once plugged in it worked just fine; however, when she opened her doors the system was already installed. This business owner did not know how to go about turning the system on and figured that she would never need it since she only had in her opinion a small business. The main problem was this business owner was not aware of the fact that an EAS system is one of the best clothing security tools in the industry. I explained that all of the clothes within her four walls could be tagged or labeled and if someone attempted to remove them from the store the EAS pedestals would sound the alarm. She understood the fact that when there is proper signage indicating there is a working EAS system even if payroll and staff have been reduced there will still be a deterrence factor against shoplifting.

The selling point to the business owner was the fact that she could purchase inexpensive labels and tags from RBC Security Solutions to tag her products. She was also impressed with the fact that the tags and labels were manufactured here in the United States. As a small business owner she appreciates the fact that companies are able to develop and manufacture products here in the US thereby supporting local economies. Once her EAS system was activated, her employees trained on how to tag/label and respond to EAS alarms her weekly inventory category counts immediately improved, the hemorrhaging stopped. Another small business saved with the ingenuity of an American business improvising and manufacturing products that help keep businesses from failing due to high shrink.

Hollywood Trends are High Theft Priority

Celebrities set the trends. If Lady Gaga sings about her Michael Kors handbag and how “you” can’t afford one, her fans will be sporting the pricey bags soon after. At around $350 a pop, not everyone will be able to shell out the cash for one.

Along with handbags, Michael Kors designs watches, clothes, wallets and fashion jewelry-all at high-end prices. Knowing what brands are hot in the media world can set you a step ahead of the game. Using retail anti-theft devices and paying particularly close attention to the activity occurring on the sales floor near those sought after brands can help deter theft.

Another fad-brand in the celeb world is True Religion, a high-fashion jean brand that is commonly targeted for theft. Lucky Brand has also been made famous by celebrities and is highly desired. Most brands that the rich and famous boast about are unaffordable to the average consumer and therefor more likely to pose a problem of theft.

Whether you run a big box store or a specialty boutique, it is integral to know your brands and add extra  retail clothing security tags where needed.

Clothing Security Methodology

If you have a retail store that focuses on selling clothes you should be made aware of the fact that clothing security is much more than simply picking out a few retail anti-theft devices and thinking you are all set.  In truth you have to do everything from picking the anti-theft devices to ensuring the clothes are placed in an area of the store that makes them less vulnerable to potential shoplifters.

Store layouts are key in protecting your assets.  For starters; placing the clothes as far from the entrance as possible ensures that they are less likely to be the target of ‘grab-and-dash’ types of theft.  Then, ensuring that there are very visible cameras or other forms of surveillance devices helps make the thieves think twice when targeting said items.  Finally, the biggest issue in clothing security is protecting items going into a fitting room.  Not all places can afford to add it to the payroll, but I cannot proclaim the value of a continuous fitting room attendant enough.  A physical presence of a store employee is an almost surefire way to keep people from using your fitting rooms to steal items from your store.

Are You Seeing Every Facet with your Clothing Security?

Having a clothing alarm in your store is obviously the best clothing security device you can employ. That being said the system is only as good as the people and policies that work and are enforced within those same four walls. Being a multi unit loss prevention manager allowed me to see how good or how bad a clothing alarm could work depending on the store staff. In the good stores the employees were trained from day one on the importance of clothing security, how to place security tags on clothes, how the clothing security tags functioned and how to properly react to a clothing alarm.

Knowledgeable store managers understood that having a Checkpoint system was a benefit that if worked with properly could reduce the store’s shrink. They also understood that the weakest employee would be their weakest link in shrink reduction. An inept employee could have negative effects on the clothing alarm system in a number of ways; for example, they could improperly place security tags on clothes causing damage to the product or offering little or no deterrence to the potential shoplifter, they could simply forget to apply the checkpoint tags and they could improperly react to a clothing alarm by overreacting or not reacting at all. The good store managers are always on top of training and auditing compliance of the consistency and proper application of the checkpoint tags.

One of my stores was constantly having issues with attempts and successful defeats of the clothing security tags. This is a huge red flag that there are much larger problems within the store. I immediately called my district sales counterpart to review and crunch some numbers. We sat down and reviewed inventory counts as well as daily, weekly and monthly sales trends and quickly realized that shrink was trending up and sales were trending down. I knew this would be the case but I wanted my sales partner to be there when I put the two trends together so that he could see how I came about that conclusion from a few defeated checkpoint tags. In an attempt to defeat security tags on clothes you bring a lot of attention to yourself as well as make a lot of noise. Having this many repeated offenses within one store told me that the staff was not employing good customer service and had become task oriented as opposed to paying attention to their surroundings and more importantly to the customer. I invited my sales partner to sit in the LP office and watch the performance of his staff. Within an hour we had concluded that indeed a mass training effort was needed, and as a side note he helped me and one of my store detectives apprehend a shoplifter who had cut a couple checkpoint tags off of some shirts and stuffed them down his pants.

My sales partner could not believe we had found poor sales numbers and poor customer service practices as a result of finding defeated clothing security tags. I explained to him that the checkpoint system is helpful on many levels and every piece if studied can give you insight as to the entire business not merely loss prevention. From that point on we shared a great partnership that opened many insights for both of us into either side of the business.

That type of partnership allows for deeper understanding of business decisions that on the surface you with which you may not agree. Clothing security is imperative and necessary but one must never forget to utilize every facet of the checkpoint system. I always tell my peers never doubt what a checkpoint system can do for your business.

Where is your weakest link?

When it comes to applying clothing security, we had a solid tagging process in place in our store. As soon as the merchandise was received, we had a tag on it. The only problem was that when I went to audit our tagging compliance on the sales floor, I was always coming up with clothes missing tags. Our receiving team swore it wasn’t them, and after observing their process I knew it had to be something else. What we finally came to realize was that one frequently missed task when providing clothing security was the tagging of returned merchandise. There are often very firm and well planned processes in place for tagging merchandise such as clothes as they are received, but if you do not have a hold on tagging merchandise as it is returned you will always come up short.

Often times returned merchandise is missed in regard to anti-theft devices. It is a process in which merchandise is brought into the store, yet it is often not considered as receiving. Because of this it can cause us to miss the regular processes that are followed when merchandise is received. Having product protection plans in place for merchandise that is returned can have a huge impact on ensuing complete accuracy.

Straightening out Your Clothing Security Situation

If you own or manage a retail establishment, chances are you sell clothes and also get them stolen from you. I have been doing loss prevention for over five years and I can honestly say that clothing is always on the top of all shrink department lists. It is important to invest in clothing security by purchasing retail anti-theft devices to place on the merchandise. These are extremely inexpensive and also have an enormous return on investment.

Cheap tags can be purchased and placed on merchandise with no risk of damaging the product. I would also recommend investing in cheap labels as well just to provide further visual protection warning shoplifters that the clothes are protected.

Clothing security is essential in businesses in order to make sure the only things leaving your store are paid for. I have done countless surveillance of shoplifters and they leave the clothes with anti-theft devices alone.

Clothing Shotput

Over a span of a decade, I’ve seen a lot of weird things working loss prevention.  You always have your boosters that come in and try to pop off anti-theft devices like they are on some sort of Olympic time trial, or a door hitter that grab as much as they can and could care less if clothes are tagged.  The entertainment, however, lies with shoplifters who are caught off guard by those pesky little cheap tags.

It was a typical day, strolling around the women’s department, when I saw an older woman acting suspicious.  She was selecting multiples of the same item, taking clothes off hangers, your typical shoplifting signs.  I stood back as she concealed multiple items into a shopping bag and headed cautiously towards the exit.  She hit the front door, the EAS system alarmed and the look of panic came across her face.  I stepped in front of her and attempted to ID myself, but had to duck out of the way as she heaved the shopping bag a good twenty feet across the mall floor and attempted to hightail it.  Although I was laughing hysterically, I quickly caught up to her and someone else picked up the bag she tried to throw away.  After all the paperwork was filed she admitted she thought she only took clothes without any anti-theft devices so she panicked when the alarm went off.  Out of curiosity, I asked her why she threw the bag like a shot put rather than just dropping it?  She said she really wasn’t thinking clearly… that much was clear.

Strange tales in the clothing security industry

All of us within the loss prevention field have had those moments where we question how people can prove to be so lacking in common sense or logic.

It wasn’t until around five in the afternoon last Saturday that our shoplifter du jour walked through the first floor mall entry point.  Right away the woman set off every alert signal in the profession: clothes that didn’t fit the weather, an almost immediate focus on the cameras, and she made a path for one of the most secluded corners of the first floor, which just so happened to be located next to the designer shirts.

With two LP detectives observing through the CCTV and one on the floor we bore witness to this young woman pulling two empty shopping bags from her pockets and then began moving from rack to rack deftly pulling clothes from their hangers and dropping them in her bags in front of dozens of other customers, some of whom spoke out or reported her actions to store employees.  She paid no attention to the fact that there were Checkpoint tags on the items she selected.  It took her all of three minutes to get her fill and try to escape through another entrance where immediately all of the clothing security tags triggered the alarm just as two LP detectives and three local police officers converged on her.  In spite of the witnesses who pointed her out, in spite of the clothing alarm that alerted everyone to her theft, in spite of the blatant video evidence she protested her innocence and insisted we were all crazy and she would see us on the end of a lawsuit.

Right now she is facing five years in prison for the extent of her crimes.

Repeat clothing returns

There is a tactic among the more seasoned shoplifters where one will legitimately purchase clothes and then go to another store and steal the exact same items to return them for a refund on what they had paid for the original ones.  It is so common a practice I probably witness it at least once a week.  Many companies have taken steps to counter this fiendish practice which includes a return tracking system which informs sales staff when an item has already been returned prior to the current attempt to do so.  This system is not without its flaws and on more than one occasion I have seems store management override said system to “make the customer happy because it might have been a mistake”.

I’m not saying it’s outside the realm of possibility that someone messed up but more often than not it’s a repeat returner trying to pull a fast one.  Unfortunately for those dealing with clothing security there is little we can do except enforcing adherence to these policies and training our staff for the tell-tale signs that a returned item was stolen in the first place.  Things like spotting rips in the fabric where anti-theft devices were forcibly removed or where said anti-theft devices might still be in place.
