Are shoplifters putting the “low” in your Halloween sales? Time to start thinking about clothing security!

Halloween is fast approaching us and there is nothing scarier for a business owner than to see their merchandise being stolen. Even if thieves steal only one item, that one item will not only impact your profits but it means you have to sell even more just to make up for the stolen goods. Now that is something that can really damper the holiday spirit.

So how can you protect your store from theft? One of the most cost effective ways is to implement clothing security tags such as the Checkpoint tags. These devices come in all sizes to fit the needs of your business. However, they share a fundamental element: they will provide valuable clothing security in your store. There are some labels that can be hidden underneath barcodes on fragrances and other boxed merchandise. There are also clothing security tags which conveniently and discreetly attach to clothing items. If a thief had a choice between attempting to steal the item with clothing security tags and going down the block to the store without any protection, which store do you think they would rather steal from? The choice is easy.

Preventing theft in your store doesn’t require a full surveillance team. Many of the thieves can be scared away simply by the sight of security tags on clothes. Clothing security can ensure your product stays where it is supposed to: on your shelves or in the hands of your customers. So don’t let shoplifters trick or treat in your store. Scare them away with Checkpoint tags!

So you think you know

Most people think that they know all about clothing security just because they know of Checkpoint tags. But what a lot of people, and business may not know is the extent of the products that Checkpoint tags come in.

Clothing security tags go far beyond just the old school hard tags and soft tags that set of the clothing alarms at the doors.

The security tags on clothes now come in more sleek, discreet, and varied configurations than ever before. The products even come with varying levels of security awareness and prevention.

Take the Alpha Security line of 3 Alarm products. They are designed to work with more specific solutions that their one alarm products. A 3 Alarm product has three levels of security.

It takes the traditional one alarm (which is the traditional alarm at the door) and adds on to it. It also has a tamper alarm. If someone tries to tamper or disable the alarm mechanism before they leave the store, the alarm on the product itself will go off.

Finally the stage three is the alarm if the product does leave the store before being deactivated. This comes in handy in “grab n run” scenarios. The alarm will not only sound as it passes through the pedestals, but the alarm will continue to go off for a full ten minutes after it has been activated.

Some like it hotter

Heat waves have been sweeping the country. It seems like most of us just can’t do enough to escape the triple digit temperatures. All of the radio and TV reporters are talking constantly about staying inside of air-conditioned buildings and other ways to beat the heat.

So you know what happens next, right? Everyone goes to one of the most prominent air-conditioned public buildings around: the mall. Later, they go to chill out at the pool.

In between those two actions, we have seen an influx in the theft of bathing suits.

Good for us, we are using the “Golf Ball” tags on our swimwear. These anti theft devices are made up of two identical halves. About the size and shape of a smashed golf ball, the pin on the tag is concealed inside one of the halves.

When the two halves are pressed together, the pin is not exposed, making it a great piece of clothing security for stretchy and mesh swimwear. It’s great because it stays in place, and it is less likely to damage the clothes.

The shiny new bracelets

It has been a busy week for shoplifters. I guess when the weather gets warm and everyone is out, some people are trying to sneak into the crowds to shoplift clothes undetected.

We have had our share of cuts and scrapes from shoplifters trying to take off the anti theft devices. We use a better quality tag, so it does not pry apart easily, or can be cut with wire snips without doing some damage to themselves in the process.

You have to watch what kind of EAS tags you use for your clothes. All too often the cheap tags are of poor quality and workmanship. The plastic is thin and easy to break. Any seams are not sealed tight and allow for a screwdriver to pry them loose.

Just because you need a cheap tag doesn’t mean you have to settle for an inferior product. You spend the time to ensure a quality product in your store. Do your clothes justice and give them quality EAS tags to protect them.

I have something in my pocket

There are plenty of clothes and accessories that do not accommodate a hard EAS anti theft device used for clothing security. It may not seem like a soft adhesive label would be a good fit, but if you get a little creative, you can increase your odds of success in preventing theft.

If you carry wallets or purses, it is easy to slip one of the soft labels into the pocket. Of course you can leave the paper backing on if you want. Since the soft labels will not adhere correctly to some fabrics or flowing materials, there is not a need to even try to stick them on somewhere.

You can put the labels in the pockets of jeans or other pants. Hard tags might be too bulky for some of the skinny jeans, even at the bottom cuff.

Since the labels can stay on the paper, it is simple to cut them apart, or even just rip the paper rolls with your fingers to expedite the process.

Accessible solutions

Accessibility can be a key component to merchandising and sales. In my time as a department manager for a men’s clothing outfitters, I spent a lot of time evaluating and changing out my display mannequins.

If I put an outfit up on display on Friday morning, by Sunday afternoon, all of my product, well at least the popular sizes, would be completely sold out. If I didn’t have any of an item on the shelf, the shirt would literally be taken off of my mannequin’s back.

It was about having the merchandise accessible to the customer’s that allowed for the sales to take place. They could see the clothing hang correctly. They could touch and manipulate the fabrics. They could visualize themselves in those clothes. Accessible.

With the mannequin displays, it was easy to use clothing security tags. I could hide them in the fold of a collared shirt, or even retag the pants in the back waistband. It was easy to rearrange the clothing security tags without jeopardizing our clothing security.

I didn’t need my clothing security to be like Fort Knox with every thing under a strict lock and key. I just needed enough security to make sure that if someone did try to steal the clothes that the clothing alarm would go off as they exited the store.

Red, White, and blew right by

A grab and run is a theft scenario where a person or group of people load up their arms, bags, carts, etc with store product and clothes, run as fast as they can to a car usually waiting at the curb with the engine running, and high tail it out of there.

Because it happens so fast, it is hard to identify who it was, or even to get a plate number from the vehicle.

That doesn’t mean you can’t produce some sort of clothing security to protect against a grab and run.

To start with, enforce a no parking policy in front of the store. Many stores are set up with this area as a fire lane anyway, so just use that as an excuse to move cars right along.

Next watch for anyone quickly loading up mass quantities of clothes.

If someone is lingering by the exits with product, ask them if they need any help, or offer to hold their choices at the register.

Merchandise, in general

Working with general merchandise is a relatively new thing for me. I have spent most of my tenure working with clothing security. Overall the concepts are the same, but the clothes are different. As a result, there is a different criminal element that comes in to steal. The things they are after are not what I would usually expect.

This is where I have been seeing more clothing theft as an after thought instead of the main goal. Even without the use of anti theft devices, there is less shrink, or inventory losses in the clothing assortments.

What we do see is someone coming in and stealing personal care items, and then they may decide to take a shirt, or a pair of earrings.

The big things are baby and toddler clothes. Small little onsies or rompers fit perfectly as they are rolled up into purses, or even hidden in a pocket of a coat.

No one seems to want to just steal baby clothing, but if they are stealing something else, they take the clothes too.

Is your clothing on the Internet?

I did a recent online search for some clothes that were no longer available on the company’s web site. While I never did find the exact item I was looking for, it surprised me how many people were selling this store’s clothes online.

A few of the items were used, but a good majority of them were being sold as brand new, never worn and with tags still attached. I almost wanted to ask if they even bothered to take the anti theft devices off, or were they not there to begin with.

This is one of those cases where if it seems too good to be true, than it probably is. There is a reason why these new clothes are being sold at a huge discount. It is because they are, more than likely, stolen items.

If you carry one of a kind piece, or think that you might have a theft problem, check your internet stores to see if your items are being resold. If they are, your local law enforcement usually has an electronic or internet crime division.

Lock it in

The clothing industry or the fashion industry at whatever level you can think of (high end, specialty, even low cost) knows that clothing is the bread and butter of their market or niche.

What I mean by that is the basic clothing sales are what keep them going. Sales around the jeans, the little black dress, even plain white men’s undershirts, are what keeps most clothing companies in business.

The profitability of these stores or businesses come from add on sales. Think about the shoes and accessories. You can easily spend the same amount of money on the shirt and pants as what you can to finish that outfit off with shoes, a bag and of course, jewelry.

When you carry jewelry you enter into a new sticky realm of balancing out the additional sales, and the inevitable shoplifting that will come along with it.

Clothing security tags do not work well on jewelry. What you can do is pair your Checkpoint tags with the new Jewel Lok.

Similar to the Checkpoint tags effectiveness at deterring shoplifters, the Jewel Lok is a locking mechanism that attaches directly onto the loose jewelry and earrings. These Loks set off a clothing alarm if they are not removed at the point of purchase.

Because the Lok attaches directly onto the product, it cannot be discarded like the old soft tag in the jewelry cards.
