Clothing Security, How does it look?

I’ve been in loss prevention for 10+ years so I know the purpose of having anti-theft devices on merchandise, but most of the general public think differently.  I think we’ve all been in a fitting room, trying to hide clothing security tags while looking in the mirror.  For that reason, most of my friends ask repeatedly why it’s necessary to go to such lengths to protect clothes.

As a retailer, it’s an easy choice; loose merchandise or tag it.  I’ve dealt with a variety of anti-theft devices such as Ultramax, RF, Cheap labels, Ink tags, Cheap tags, etc.  As loss prevention I want something that is going to keep clothes in the store, as a customer I want clothing security that doesn’t hinder the shopping experience.

I swear by small anti-theft devices.  They are harder for shoplifters to defeat, easier for associates to remove at point of sale and not such an eye sore.  It’s all about finding that balance between keeping your clothes secure and keeping your customers happy.

The constant alarm

Does your clothing alarm go off constantly? Your employees are probably so numb to the sound that they don’t even realize that it is going off. Even worse, they may hear it and completely disregard it, telling everyone around them that it is broken. Either way, those actions can wreak havoc on your clothing security.

For starters, most false alarms are not because of a broken tower or pedestal. More than likely there is a tag in the area, or clothes that are too close to the sensors with anti theft devices on it.

Another option is that you are using cheap tags and labels that are foreign made imitations. They may not always be reliable. Soft tags can reactivate if they are not of good quality. Did you ever think that if one of your employees purchases your clothes that have these cheap labels sewn in, that as they wear the item, they may be setting off an alarm? How embarrassing for both you and for them.

If you are using reliable cheap tags and cheap labels, you can at least throw out that as a list of reasons why your alarm might go off.

Your brand merchandise strategy

Everyone in the retail industry has a brand. It is how you and your stores look, think, act and convey you to the consumer. Billions of dollars are spent on company branding every year. These brands transcend beyond the company logo, right down to the very detail of displays of clothes and other accessories.

Clothing security should be just as much of an integral part of your company’s brand strategy. Your brand should show how to use anti theft devices and where they will be put on the products.

Your brand should also place emphasis on the fact that you do use anti theft devices to reduce your shrink. You can easily put up a sign on the doors or near fitting rooms that you electronically monitor your merchandise.

The placement of your devices can also play a role in letting your customers know that you are reducing your shrink risk through EAS. You can place these tags as prominently as you like or as discreetly as you want based on your marketing and brand strategy.

The Bathroom Scam

When you catch someone stealing clothes, they always try to talk their way out of it. I have found over the years that one of the more popular ways is to claim a need to use a restroom.

On occasion, it might be a real excuse, and it’s one that shouldn’t be ignored completely. If a shoplifter asks to use a bathroom, be accommodating, but also try to stall until the local authorities arrive (if you are prosecuting). They are much more knowledgeable about handling such situations.

When a shoplifter tries to steal items and isn’t able to get the anti theft devices off, they might try to conceal them on their person. If the shoplifter goes into the privacy of a restroom stall, they will try to ditch those items and claim that you are wrong in apprehending them.

Clothing security does not take into consideration the human element, so be careful, and be observant. Recover the merchandise first, and then allow use of a bathroom. After they are out of the stall (no need to violate their privacy inside the stall), make a quick check to ensure no other clothes were discarded.

Glad they were there

A woman came into the store with a baby stroller over the weekend. While she didn’t do anything right away that caught my attention, I had a gut feeling that I needed to watch her.

It wasn’t long before I realized that my suspicions were right. As she was walking around the men’s department, she started to run her hands down the legs of some pants. As soon as found the clothing security tags, she moved on to the next pair. Because she never looked for a specific size of pants, I knew something was a bit fishy.

She continued on this way around the department, until she found a shirt that did not have any clothing security tags. Down she went, and a split second later the shirt was shoved under the basket of the stroller.

She hid the shirt so fast, that if you had not been already watching, you never would have noticed a thing. She went through the rest of the men’s department and then on towards the women’s section.

Sure enough, she followed the same process of looking for security tags on clothes. Two more shirts and a pair of sunglasses later she was out walking through the doors, knowing that she would not set off a clothing alarm with her choices.

We were there to make the apprehension, much to her surprise. Had it not been for the security tags on clothes that she had to sort through, I might not have spotted her.

The response

Do you know how to respond to an alarm going off in your store? If you are using a Checkpoint system for your clothing security, you probably already do. The next question is do your employees know?

Chances are, they may not. There is an element of confrontation involved when you respond to an alarm. It is not the same type confrontation that a salesperson selling clothes is using to approach a customer.

You might find that one of the reasons your alarms are going off unattended, is that your employees simply are not comfortable with that confrontation. They are probably unsure of what to say, and unsure of how the customer is going to react.

The best way to handle this is to take a copy f your company policies and run through the response script with your employees. Give them a chance to approach you acting as a customer. Give them some real life examples of what to expect. I’ll bet your alarm responses start to go up after this training.

What else is lost

Over the years of catching and apprehending shoplifters, I have found that there are other losses that are not picked up on during the initial contact with the shoplifter.

Let me give you a few examples. When I worked security for a home improvement chain, it was not uncommon for a shoplifter to pick up a bucket and stuff it full of 18V drill batteries and then walk out the door. The cashiers never thought a shoplifter would steal a bucket, so they just assumed it was theirs.

When I worked clothing security, I saw the same thing with purses and book bags. These bags would be packed full of clothes that had not been paid for, yet the shoplifters would calmly walk out the door with not only the stolen clothes, but the stolen purse or bag.

The first time I encountered a situation like that, I faltered for a moment, and then thought to check the book bag. Sure enough, it was ours, and had been stolen.

Where or Where Did my Copper Go??

Have you been looking for a specific copper piece at your local big box or hardware store, only to stare at empty shelves?  With copper over $3.00 per pound, copper is stolen at such a high rate it’s hard for most stores to keep in inventory.  Working with such products and seeing the alarming rate at which they fly off the shelf, it’s hard for stores to come up with anti-theft devices.

Many clothes stores use hard tags, like cheap tags, that create a seal for clothing security.  They also use soft labels, that are easily removed and usually don’t stick to items for any great length of time.  I was always under the impression that soft tags on clothes or jewelry were just a visual deterrent and nothing more.

The biggest hurdle with copper is combating high dollar fraud returns.  I would see numerous packages of copper returned with the soft tags ripped out.  Once the company started to use cheap labels we began to see a decrease in copper returns.  When applied near the UPC will make it impossible to rip the anti-theft device out without ripping the UPC off.  Without a barcode to scan, the product becomes worthless to the thief looking to do a return.

One size doesn’t fit all

You specialize in clothing that fits and flatters and has a appeal to a broad spectrum of customers. Yet you are keenly aware that you can’t sell one size fits all to every single person that comes through your doors. You have to be able to tailor your approach to get the best results.

The security tags on clothes you carry should not have to be a one size fits all solution. Different fabrics, different seasons, different product groups all require their own level of attention to detail. You should expect that type of assortment from your clothing security.

That is one of the single best reasons to use Checkpoint tags for your clothing security. They have a wide array of clothing security tags so you can create a custom fit for all of your individual clothing security needs.

Hard Checkpoint tags don’t work for every piece of jewelry, so switch them up with a new Jewel Lok, designed specifically for stud and hoop earrings and loose jewelry items, like displays.

Soft Checkpoint tags can be discarded from some price labels failing to set off the clothing alarm. Replace them with the 3 Alarm product lines that alarms if it is tampered with inside the store.

Your clothing isn’t one size fits all, now your Checkpoint tags don’t have to be either.

When I was young

Back when I was in grade school, I had a friend that I would go to the mall with. She always wanted to go check out some amazing sale. I never really saw the sales she did. I also never saw her buy anything, but the next day she would show up at school wearing something new.

I was pretty young and naive at that point. I didn’t figure out until much later that my friend would be shoplifting clothes when we would go into the fitting rooms. Back in those days, there wasn’t much for clothing security and retail anti theft devices were almost non-existent.

Much has changed over the years, and it’s for the best. I hate to think about what would have happened if she had been caught while we were out. Would I have been drug into her mess too?

If there had been retail anti theft devices like EAS in use, than maybe she wouldn’t have been as tempted to steal.
