Hats Off To You

I had a shoplifter last week and all he really wanted was a new hat. He came into the department and started to try on every hat he could get his hands on. Gradually, he started to narrow down his selection to just a few hats.

 What caught my eye wasn’t that he was making a huge mess out of the discarded hats, it was how he was looking at the hats he liked.

 He wasn’t comparing the hats to his clothes, or his shoes. He wasn’t even looking at them in the mirror any more. Most guys, when they are looking to buy a ball cap, will play with the bill, and try to get just the right curve to it. This guy seemed to be stretching the bill out, as if looking for something on the inside.

 I guess he finally decided that it was free of anti theft devices and put the one he liked on his head. He bee lined for the door, and headed out. We stopped him, and recovered the hat.

Partnership between Security and Sales!

While working for a mid-sized clothing retailer I experienced the growing pains of a company trying to implement goals and policies from a large clothing company. One of those tools was the Checkpoint system; a rf based clothing alarm system. It is the best clothing security system on the market. That interactive partnership is not just within the loss prevention department but with all employees including management. This can prove to be a challenge since any requirement that demands more work and additional payroll can cause conflict among department heads.

The main conflict was between loss prevention and the sales department. The sales department and loss prevention had to sit down and review Checkpoint’s training materials which very explicitly explained that implementation and success was based on every employee’s willingness to take part in the deployment of the system. While the structure was being installed we jumped into the main differences between the departments to diffuse the problems before the system installation was complete. Once we reviewed the overall clothing security plan which included attaching, auditing and removing clothing security tags, it was fully understood by both sides that they had to work together to ensure a successful deployment. The training material and the support from the checkpoint representative were the grease on the hard to mesh gears. The training material mapped out the success to clothing security in a very detailed fashion. The main overall point throughout the training was triumph through teamwork. We also learned that consistency on the application of the clothing security tags was very important as well as daily or weekly audits of the checkpoint tags for compliance.

The process was slow only because of the friction that already existed within the company between sales and loss prevention. I do feel though that because the checkpoint system required interaction from everyone it brought the two departments closer whether they liked it or not. Employees from both sides of the fence working shoulder to shoulder placing security tags on clothes gave them all a vested interest to protect inventory as well as insight into each others day to day activities In the end the checkpoint system became a healing salve that allowed the company to grow closer and start the process of growing together to become bigger and better everyday.

The right tag for the right materials

Delicate fabrics are everywhere right now. Easy, breezy linens, stretchy Lycra blends in swim wear, and burn out tee shirts are all inundating the clothes racks at all major retailers right now. Warm weather is brining out these great fabrics, and with them a need to take extra care in how they are EAS tagged.

Moving Day

If you have ever had to move, you know what a pain it can be. There’s the packing, and hauling, and then once you get everything into your new place you have to unpack it all.

Sometimes, for me, I have a hard time trying to figure out where to put all of my belongings in the new place. At the old house, there was a rhyme and reason. Clothing Security Tags Versus Shoplifters

Almost a tradition, Clothing security tags and a clothing alarm have long defended the retailer against shoplifters. At times the competition is all out war. Fortunately for many companies, clothing security tags are winning the battle. Yet, there are still others that have one hand tied behind their back attempting clothing security.

I once read a book about shoplifting or shoplifters, the name of the slips my memory, but it was written from the shoplifter’s point of view. Included in the text was “how to shoplift”, “what to do if you are approached by managers or security” and much more. There was a whole chapter dedicated to clothing security. The author details specifics about retailers clothing security processes, what they do and don’t do. On several occasions the author tells the readers to stay away from stores with clothing security tags, as they make the task of stealing more difficult. At the time this book was written, the technology of clothing security tags was in its infancy. Mostly, the large box retailers used security tags on clothes.

I found this book interesting and laughable, yet a tool for retailers to use to build a solid defense and clothing security. To this day, it gives good tips on shoplifting activities as the basics of shoplifting have not changed. They want the merchandise, and they want it easily.

Shoplifting is a huge problem for clothing retailers. If you are still operating your stores without security tags on clothes, your time will come. Even if you feel your store is in a “nice” area and don’t experience shoplifting, you’re kidding yourself. You down with OOP?

OOP, or Out of Package items can create unnecessary work and margin loss to items that often don’t have a huge mark up to begin with. Clothes that come in packages, like socks or dress shirts, are common out of package items.

 All too often I go into stores and see rounders full of shirts haphazardly thrown onto available hangers, marked at an additional discount. Socks are even worse. Someone has to take the time to hang tag them together, hope it stays, and then put out on the same hooks as the nicely packaged ones.

 Most of the time OOP occur because a customer wants to try an item on for fit, or feel the quality of the clothes. Less frequently, but still a problem are those that open a package to take out one of the components and steal it.

 Maybe it is the tie that comes with the shirt, or a special accessory included on a specific packaged deal. Anti theft devices can be attached to these items prior to a theft, or they can be added afterwards to these out of package items.

Keep it on a leash

When you think of clothing security, you generally think about either the hard EAS tags, or the soft labels. Both are commonplace in retail.

 The soft tags are generally embedded into a price label, or might be slid into the pocket of a wallet, or adhered to the brim of a ball cap.

 The hard tags are a little more bulky, and are made in two parts. There is the tag and the pin, which needs to pierce the garment or accessory to attach.

 Sometimes, neither of these are good anti theft device options for clothing security. Soft tags can be removed depending upon placement. Hard tags can rip and snag delicate or stretchy fabrics.

All in one

I am not a space cadet. I am generally very well organized; I have a place for everything and everything in its place. I have to do lists, task lists, calendars, organizers, email reminders, you name it, I have probably got it and used it at some point along the way.

That being said, when you work in retail, anything and everything can potentially happen along the way. In the course of going from my office, around three departments and up a set of stairs to another set of offices, I can be stopped by anywhere from three to thirty people all needing something. If I don’t write it down, in my notebook, I’ll forget, and if I loose my notebook that I did write it down in, well things can start to fall apart easily at that point.
