It’s Elastic!

In economics, there is a definition of elasticity that talks about how a reduction in the price of an item (say clothes) is reduced, and the seller’s revenue increases.

Basically, it explains how a retailer can make more money by putting an item on sale. The key is in the increased sales by quantity.

The more you sell, the more you make.

What if you don’t have the clothes to sell because they keep walking out the door? Are you still elastic? The answer is probably not, because you won’t have the quantity of clothes in place to make the sales worthwhile.

Anti theft devices are a great way to utilize clothing security methods to help you stay elastic. There is nothing worse as a customer to go to a store looking for a specific sales item and finding out that they are all sold out.

It’s even more disappointing, as an owner or manager to realize you have lost out on those precious sales because you no longer have the items in, due to theft.

Anything else?

When you look at clothing security for your clothes, chances are good that you will probably not use anti theft devices on every single piece of your inventory. Most retailers spend their time and efforts tagging over a certain price point, or product group, depending upon their shrink results and trends.

That doesn’t mean that you will never find someone stealing an item just because it did not have any tags. I had a recent shoplifting instance where the shoplifter stole a shirt that did not have a tag.

What was more important, was that we missed this suspect stealing a pair of jeans also. When they went out the door with the merchandise, the alarm went off. It wasn’t until later on, in our office, that we discovered our oversight.

The shirt we saw him take did not have a sensor tag on it that would have set off the alarm. We realized that he had to have something else; another piece of our clothing that did have a tag on it.

With out those tags, we never would have recovered the stolen jeans.

Clothing Security: The Key to Profits

Throughout my years of being a Loss Prevention Officer, I came to the realization that anti-theft devices placed properly on clothes can save a lot of headache, worry, and most of all money. If your main source of sales come from softlines (i.e. clothes), profitability and clothing security go hand in hand.

A large part of preventing as much loss as possible is deterring theft. Deterring theft is an inexpensive tactic that all business should take seriously. If you are a thief what would you rather steal: A stack of jeans with anti-theft devices in place? Or a stack of jeans that are un-protected just asking to be stolen? Stores without no loss prevention or minimal loss prevention staffing must employ deterrence, clothing security, and customer service tactics in order to prevent as much shrink/loss as possible.

Visual deterrents are the best tools for this. As stated earlier, these tactics are very inexpensive. Cheap tags that clip onto clothing can come in all sorts of sizes and shapes to fit the needs of your business. These cheap tags will not damage the merchandise either, so there is no need for worrying about damaging your clothes. Cheap labels are a nice compliment for the tags and anti-theft devices in acting as a further visual deterrent for any potential shoplifters. Cheap labels warn would-be thieves that the merchandise is protected, and any type of theft will be detected.

Watch Where You Put That Thing

When you are using clothing security tags to protect your clothing inventory, it is necessary to find a consistent and customer friendly place to attach them. When I conduct my audits, I have seen that some stores do not do a very good job with their consistency. As a result, their clothing security is less than stellar.

One of the key points of good clothing security is to eliminate false clothing alarms. If the alarm is registering constantly, it becomes about as effective as hearing a car alarm in a parking lot. When was the last time anyone took those seriously?

If you put your security tags on clothes in the same place each and every time, then you cashiers all know when and where to look for them. Often the clothing alarms that I respond to have a tag in the improper place.

When we push our cashiers for fast and friendly check outs, we need to understand that if a tag isn’t where it is supposed to be, they rarely will take the time to search the entire garment just to see if there is possibly a tag on there.

By having one set place for security tags on clothes to be attached, you eliminate the guesswork for a cashier. You also reduce the amount of false alarms, and unhappy customers who have been delayed and embarrassed by that same alarm.

What you can’t see

I had a shoplifting apprehension the other day. We thought it was a pretty routine case. A male walked into the men’s wear department and picked up a shirt. He headed into the fitting room, so we sent an employee in to see if he needed any help.

After a few min, the male came back out of the fitting room with the shirt. He then walked into a far corner of the store. We watched as he took the shirt off the hanger, rolled it up tightly, and stuck it under his arm so no one would see it.

As he was leaving the store, the clothing alarm went off. At the time I didn’t think anything of it. We knew he hadn’t paid for the shirt at a register, so there was bound to be a clothing security tag left on it.

After we got him back into our office for processing, I picked up the shirt to catalogue the item number and description. I looked for the price tag to get the information, and as I turned the shirt around in my hand, it struck me that the shirt didn’t have a Checkpoint tag on it.

I then turned my attention to the suspect who was adamant about going to the bathroom. As it turned out, he had stuffed a pair of jeans into his jacket. They had a checkpoint tag which set the clothing alarm off.

Without the tag, we never would have known about the jeans he had stolen.

Out Smart Retail Thief’s with Labels

The best strategy to prevent theft is to tag everything. You can put anti-theft devices on any product with the right tag. With clothes you can put hard tags and screamers, but what about items like glasses, books, and DVD’s? The solution is cheap labels. They are economical and best of all easy to hide. This enables you to slip a tag onto any random page of a book or hide a label in a glasses case.

If theft in your area is a problem, labels can give extra protection to your clothes. A label can blend in well with the tags on the inside of a shirt or dress. In addition to a hard tag the label will sound if a shoplifter walks through your electronic article surveillance, thus bringing all eyes to the front.

At my place of work I have seen many people who thought the stuff they were stealing were tag less, then suddenly freeze and turn around after the EAS sounds off. Teenagers will come in, snag the newest weight-loss pill bottle thinking it can’t be tagged only to turn around and put it back on the shelf.

The items that are shoplifted most are items that aren’t tagged. Anti-theft devices are well worth the price, a tag and label will warn off any thief’s and in turn you will keep your profits from walking out the door.

Tie One On

One often-overlooked piece of clothing that can cause a significant amount of shrink is men’s ties. Right now millions of teenage and adult men are looking for ties. They need them for proms, and commencement ceremonies, job interviews, and don’t forget Father’s day is just around the corner. What Dad hasn’t received the ubiquitous tie as a present there?

Clothing security tags aren’t just for the rest of a man’s wardrobe. Ties need their own clothing security as well. Ties pose a specific risk because they can be easily concealed. Ties can be rolled up and shoved into a pocket, or they can be stretched flat against a shoplifter’s body. Ties can even be tied on and worn out the door.

Because ties can easily range from $30 to well over $100 or even two hundred dollars a shot, any losses can add up quickly.

Clothing security in the way of soft labels is the easiest way to go. While you can use a hard tag, I would caution as to where you attach it. Since most ties are a silk, or silk blend, the EAS tag’s pins can easily catch, creating a run and ruining the tie.

Don’t get caught off guard because you were too busy trying to protect your other merchandise. Don’t forget to tie one on.

If the shoe fits

Why anyone would ever try to come up with some elaborate, nearly impossible to execute plan to reduce shrink, is beyond me. I routinely ask my department heads to create working solutions to help solve their department’s shrink.

On one hand, it helps create accountability when they have to execute their own plans, versus something I came up with. Secondly, they are in their departments every day and understand the subtle nuances and challenges they face.

I have seen some doozies, let me tell you! I have even asked them, if they really think that their plan will work, and they look at me and reluctantly say no. Sometimes, it just really doesn’t need to be complicated.

When your clothes are walking out the door without being paid for, it’s time to use a realistic solution to clothing security.

Using an anti theft device is one of the easiest ways to combat shrink. If the shoe fits, then wear it. If the anti theft device prevents theft, well, then use it!

You Get What You Pay For

When you hear somebody talking about you only get what you pay for, they are all too often talking about a poor quality item they paid for and are mostly regretting. You rarely hear someone say that they spent a ton of money and well, you get what you pay for, it was great!

Don’t let that dissuade you from buying cheap tags and cheap labels for your clothing security. In this case the cheap tags and cheap labels are still a good quality item that is made by reliable hands here in the United States.

It is true that not all anti theft devices are made equally. Some, often cheap foreign imports really are of a lower quality than what you think you are paying for. It’s easy to be fooled by the lure of a low dollar price tag.

When you are selling clothes that are worth the price a customer is paying for them, it only makes sense that you would find the right combination of price and quality in the tags and labels you put on them.

Whenever you are ready

I say, “whenever you are ready” to my toddler, a lot. It is probably more sarcastic than it should be, but sometimes it helps me put things back into perspective. It helps me to remember that when I am dealing with her, I am on her time frame, not mine. It is one of the few times that I feel challenged to slow down, not to speed up.

In my professional life, “whenever you are ready” is more like “it should have been done 10 minutes ago”. I put this same urgency into clothing security. Clothing security tags can’t just be put on whenever someone feels like getting around to it. Those are the times that someone will come in and rob you blind.

Shoplifters, especially the professional ones, go out of their way to look for and exploit those situations. All it takes is one unlocked door, one stack of jeans without clothing security tags, and one moment of lethargy to add up to a very costly situation.

Clothing security is all about consistency and timeliness in execution. Even if you have the best clothing security like Checkpoint tags in place, they do no good if they are still sitting in a basket somewhere, instead of on your merchandise.

Make sure that “whenever you are ready” means “do it right, and do it right now”.
