EAS Tags, The Hottest New Clothing Accessory

Did you watch the runway shows in Paris? Yeah, I didn’t either. I know that they were going on, and it’s just a matter of time before they (or a reasonable knock off) start to hit the shelves. The reason why I didn’t watch was I had been tied up with a new shipment of clothes that needed to have Checkpoint tags attached.

I am lucky to be with a company that is so adamant about putting security tags on clothes. They understand that consistency is undeniably important to clothing security. Time after time it has been documented in post apprehension interviews with not only shoplifters, but also in employee theft cases that criminals will actively search out clothing that does not have any form of clothing security like a Checkpoint tag.

Security tags on clothes are above all a visual deterrent. It stops a shoplifter’s plan of attack. They think go in, take stuff, hurry out. If they have to add a step like “take security tags off of clothes”, their plans start to falter. Unsure of themselves and the situation, they will most likely back off rather than run the risk of being caught.

Weather you have a high end boutique with straight from the runway designs, or last season’s middle market versions, make sure to include the hottest accessory around: clothing security tags.

Anti-Theft Devices: Technology Protecting Your Profit

Clothing security is a focus of many retailers.  There are so many uncontrollable factors that can impact a retail business.  They come from the economy, merchandise trends, supply chain problems and theft.  The latter can be controlled to limit the overall impact it has on the business.  Clothing security can be used to shrink you shortage and secure your businesses clothes.

When many think of clothing security they think of large, elaborate, and expensive security systems.  This cost of clothing security is often out of the reach of a private or smaller retail business.  This does not always have to be the case.  RBC Security Solutions can provide an affordable clothing security system for a retailer.  Two of their products are the Cheap Labels and Cheap Tags.  These anti-theft devices are comparable to better-known security company anti-theft devices.  The Cheap Label is a product that is easily fixed to the merchandise and acts as a RF security device.  The Cheap Label can be used on smaller merchandise and for the retailer that does not want to impact visual impact of their clothes.  The Cheap Tags is used for the retailer whose clothes are of a higher prices point or more attractive to shoplifters.  The Cheap Tag does everything the Cheap Label does, but also provides an obvious visual presence.  This visual indication of security often deters even the most determined thieves.

How To Protect Your Fitting Rooms

One of my all time problematic areas of clothing security has been in the fitting rooms. I can’t even tell you the countless hours I have spent brainstorming new security measures specifically for that area of the store. The mix of protecting the privacy of a customer and the balance of payroll hours spent to monitor a fitting room creates a difficult task at best.

Additionally, the fitting rooms attract a few different types of theft. There is the opportunist. They are the ones who don’t come in to steal, but faced with an unclean fitting room and no watchful eyes to do a piece count, an extra item or two is liable to walk out the door.

Then there are the amateurs who know they want to steal a piece of clothing, but are way to nervous to do it on the sales floor. They will wait for hours in a fitting room until they are the only ones left. They will also take a chance against clothing security tags. Some have the fore thought to bring in a pair of wire cutters in an attempt at hacking off the pin of a clothing security tag.

The best bet to protecting a fitting room from theft is to keep the fitting rooms monitored. While I would love to suggest installing locks, I understand that it can cause a big customer issue. If a customer can’t find an employee to unlock them, you can potentially loose a sale. Next use checkpoint tags whenever possible. Often shoplifters will bypass stealing if faced with the prospect of having to remove one. They won’t run the risk of setting off a clothing alarm with a Checkpoint tag still attached.

With these simple couple of additions to your clothing security, your fitting rooms will stand a better chance of being theft free.

Take a Double Dip

I don’t know about you, but have you noticed all of the new swimwear in stock? Yeah, it has been such a mild winter, at least for me, but I don’t think I am quite ready to be thinking about buying new suit.

I guess that’s why I’m not in charge of merchandise planning. What I am in charge of is clothing security. When I see new merchandise, particularly clothes, I think about how best to use anti theft devices to reduce our store’s shrink.

Swimsuits often pose a challenge when it comes to preventing theft. The suits are made of thin material that is easily concealed in bags, purses or even under normal clothes. EAS tags aren’t always the easiest to use because the pins may snag the material.

I suggest to my stores to try a two pronged attack. First use an EAS tag on each piece of the swimsuit  (yes, tag both the tops and bottoms). Then use an EAS label to attach to price tags or in the suits’ lining wherever you can.

When you are using cheap tags and cheap labels, it is financially feasible to double up on your anti theft devices without creating major expenses.

STOP overpaying for Clothing Security!!

For those who are still buying name brand anti-theft devices I have some nice swamp land in Arizona to sell you.  I am amazed at how slow we sometimes are to take advantage of cost efficient solutions because we don’t like change.  Well here is a change worth looking into for clothing security.

Consider using cheap labels and cheap tags instead of the name brand anti-theft devices.  As with most electronic devices there are now hundreds of companies who manufacturer the same technology at a fraction of the price.  This can be seen in many aspects of the electronic industry.  The same principle applies to clothing security.  We all know how important it is to put tags on clothes.  We would lose our shirts (excuse the pun) if we didn’t.  By that same token don’t lose your shirt to the name brand security monsters too.  Consider using cheap tags and cheap labels instead and then perhaps use those savings to invest in other technology where there are not yet cheap options (such as cameras).  In today’s market we are all very aware that overhead matters so make the smart choice and spend wisely.

Shoplifters are becoming more aggressive

These are desperate times and with desperate times come desperate measures as a great man once said.  However that phrase doesn’t always apply in a positive manner.  Shoplifters, specifically the ones who are new to ‘the game’ are becoming more desperate in their methods and behaviors.  This of course makes clothing security a more dangerous game for those of us in the Loss Prevention field.

The other day we had a pair of women on camera that gathered a large bundle of clothing and then proceeded to cut off the clothing security tags using tin snips and a fish gutting knife.  They moved in such erratic and nervous patterns that my team knew right away that police intervention would be needed.  When the women had stashed their stolen goods in their bags and dumped the clothing security tags all over the floor they made for the store entrance where they were greeted by one of my teammates and three members of the local police department.

Neither woman went without putting up a fight.

In the end they were cuffed and taken away for shoplifting, resisting arrest, and attempted assault of a police officer with a deadly weapon.  Lucky for them no one suffered any injuries, but still, it could’ve been a much bloodier ordeal.  As things become more and more hopeless I am certain we will hear more stories with much more tragic endings.

But of course when things get bad it’s us, the people in loss prevention that see some of the worst of it.  As I said before, clothing security is becoming a dangerous game.  All we can do is keep our heads and not do anything stupid.

Macro and Micro

In the retail clothing industry, it is not unusual to see product groups split down into macro and micro adjacencies. You might have a men’s department split in to four or five other mini departments. Even in small specialty stores or boutiques, macros and micros exist.

As a manager or owner, you can spend countless hours trying to get your floors right. Which items should be out front and center? What should be cross-merchandised? How often are displays being reset when a new color palette or the next season’s apparel arrives?

So many decisions, so little time. With such a huge workload, it’s unfortunate to have to deal with outside forces, like shoplifters, detracting you from selling your clothes as best you can.

What if there was a way to eliminate, or at least, greatly reduce shoplifters? What would be the price? Now you have a chance to do just that. By purchasing cheap labels and cheap tags, you now have an anti theft device at the ready to maximize your store’s sales.

These tags and labels are a clear sign that you are serious about clothing security. It would be a good bet for shoplifters to just by pass your store and let you get back to the macros and micros that should be the real focus of your time.

Red Flags

I was involved in a case recently regarding a high dollar theft of jeans. Two males had come into the store. They both went behind an unopened cash wrap and picked up some empty shopping bags. They then made a beeline toward our new display of high dollar jeans.  They each took half of the stack and headed to the fitting rooms.

Our fitting rooms are supposed to be locked, but I guess that the associate had forgotten to lock them up after the last customers had used them. So now our thieves had about fifteen pairs of jeans (each), empty store bags, and open – unattended fitting rooms. Well, you can put two and two together to figure out what happened next. The two emerged from the fitting rooms with now full shopping bags.   Off they went to the exit doors to make their grand escape. We were there waiting for them as they exited.

During the interview with the subjects they told us how easy it was to steal because no one was paying attention. And they, for the most part were right. There were several breakdowns to our clothing security. This is the sort of incident I use to train my store associates on the importance of clothing security. It’s not just about having clothing security tags, it’s about being watchful of your surroundings.

While the store may not have been paying attention, we sure were. We watched the pair blatantly go behind the counter and laugh as they scooped up the jeans and headed toward the fitting room. We tell the associates these are the red flags to watch for.  It makes them feel more empowered about what they can and can’t do. I know that next time, the clothing alarm and me won’t be the only ones watching for shoplifters.

You Are Not Immune

Retailers across the world all have one thing in common. Theft. No one is immune. Clothing stores all have shoplifters. Clothing stores all have employee theft. It doesn’t matter if you are a high-end retailer, or middle market, or even a discount dollar store. Each and every one has at some point suffered a shrink loss due to deliberate theft.

So what do you do? You can’t lock everything away! While that thought has crossed most loss prevention and store managers at some point, it just really isn’t a feasible form of clothing security.

What is a more realistic approach is the use of anti theft devices like cheap tags and cheap labels. These are affordable deterrents to stop shoplifters dead in their tracks.  It also makes it much harder for an associate to steal. While associates may have more access to detachers and deactivator pads, they still run the risk of someone seeing them. Even worse is an associate who sets an alarm off as they exit the building. Trust me when I say every suspicious eye in the building is on them!
