Consider clothing security when merchandising

Basic retail knowledge involves merchandising your product so that customers want to buy it.  But you also need to merchandise so that shoplifters cannot steal.  This is an unfortunate but necessary part of doing business.  We’d love to trust all of our customers, but to do so would mean the end of any chance at a profitable business.

Clothing security can be alarms on clothes or other measures that help prevent theft.  These include employee training, teaching how to provide good customer service, and doing everything possible to help reduce the opportunity to steal.  If there is not the opportunity, then it is much harder to make the theft happen.

Having a clothing alarm system is an excellent way to reduce the theft of clothing from your store. Security tags on clothes are a great deterrent, because most shoplifters do not want to take the time to struggle with removing a clothing alarm .  Why spend that kind of time, and take the risk of an alarm drawing attention, when there are other businesses without  security tags on clothes ?  It is much easier for the customer wanting to shoplift to just go where there is not clothing security .

You have clothing security tags? Never mind…I will steal from someone else

Let’s say that I am a shoplifter scouting out your business’s clothing security measures.  I’m looking for some clothing to steal.  I don’t care about your profits, or about the fact that stealing is money directly out of your pocket.  I steal because I want something for free, and I do not want to pay for it.

I may want it to sell for a 100% profit, or I may want it for my own use.  Regardless, I look at the clothing security in your business to decide how I am going to take your things, hopefully without getting caught.

When I’m looking around in a business, with my empty purse just waiting to be filled, I look for clothing security tags.  Are there  security tags on clothes in your business?  Or are they just displayed unprotected and free for the taking, for people like me?

Having a clothing alarm is a deterrent.  If I come into your business, and I see that you have clothing security , I will move on to the next business that does not.  The last thing I want is a clothing alarm sending out its desperate cry…telling everyone that yes I’m here, and yes I am trying to steal.  I am a shoplifter and I do not want attention. Security tags on clothes would bring attention to me if I try to steal them.

Never mind, I will move on to the next business without clothing security .

Clothing security : Keep it out of the hands of thieves

Security tags on clothes are a good idea if you operate a business that sells these items. Clothing security is important to maximize profits and reduce loss associated with theft.

One common way that a shoplifter will steal is by using your fitting room to conceal your merchandise.  A shoplifter is well aware that there are no cameras in there, and that no one can see them.  To prevent this, a business must have policies and procedures in place…and be willing to enforce them!  Make sure your fitting rooms are locked at all times, and only unlocked by one of your employees when a customer is requesting to try something on.  Also, make sure that your employees physically handle the clothing that the customer is taking into the room, and that the employee stays in the area to make sure what goes in comes out.  If the shoplifter makes it inside the fitting room with what he or she wants to take…say goodbye to the profit on that merchandise.

Some shoplifters are content to conceal merchandise out on your sales floor, when they believe that none of your employees are looking. Clothing security needs to be a consideration when setting up your business.  Clothing is easy to steal – what measures are you going to take to prevent it from walking out your doors?

A Worthwhile Investment: Clothing alarms

Having a clothing alarm is a smart business move for businesses wishing to protect their assets.  Clothing is supposed to be for sale…not free for the taking.

The theft of clothing in a retail environment is unfortunately simple and very common.  Clothes can be folded up, or wadded up, and slipped easily inside of a large purse or backpack.  They can also be worn out of the store by simply putting them on under clothing.  Another shoplifting theft I’ve witnessed is a customer entering a store without a coat, and then wearing one out.  If your employees are busy helping other customers, even this brazen a theft can go unnoticed.

Businesses cannot afford to do nothing to help prevent this type of theft.  A clothing alarm can be beneficial in deterring the theft of the clothing you sell.  A potential shoplifter will come into your business, see that you have this security measure…and then they will move on to the next business.

Clothing Security Tags – 3 Alarm Hard Tags From Alpha

Imagine this: a shoplifter steals a piece of your merchandise They as they leave the store the Checkpoint System alarms but the shoplifter runs but your clothing security tags themselves have an alarm sounder built in and as he is running down the mall or street the is sounder is blasting away, for the next 30 minutes.

Clothing Security Are You A Sheep Or A Wolf?

Remember, the shoplifters are not dumb about clothing security. They know how to steal from you and are good at it. You have to be smarter and in the prevention mode rather than the reactive mode at all times. To get your store and staff in the right position consider the following issues:

Experienced, professional shoplifters will case your store in advance of hitting you. Waiting for them to be in the store and shoplifting puts you behind the curve. These thieves look for employees who are indifferent and clueless. Staff that would rather be on your phone or their cell phone are not really paying attention. For example, are you really paying that good of attention when you are on your cell phone and driving?

Shoplifters are watching to see how your staff handles an EAS clothing security alarm. Do they just wave them through or do they investigate? If one does not occur while they are watching they will make one happen.

Theses thieves will observe your staffing coverage. Do you have enough people to cover the floor? When is the customer to employee ratio the highest? Is there a time when there is only one person covering the floor even if there are not any customers present? Two shoplifters working together can create a distraction while the second one steals.

Another common tactic is for one thief to intentionally trip the EAS clothing security system and while the employee is sorting that out another goes out with the merchandise.

Thieves will also use booster bags. These are shopping bags lined with foil in an attempt to defeat the EAS clothing alarm system.

The key to prevent losses is two fold: Training is paramount! Train all new employees on the EAS clothing alarm system and shoplifting prevention. Retrain employees four times a year to keep the information fresh and to present and discuss issues that have occurred. Do not forget to ask for your staffs input. They may have some great solutions. The second is to keep your EAS clothing alarm system in top operating shape. Is it tuned properly? Are clothing security tags and labels on all products that you specify? Stop shoplifting with security tags on clothes

Clothing retailers are one of the most susceptible to loss due to shoplifting and can benefit greatly by using security tags on clothes. There are a few benefits to using this type of clothing security.

First, the primary goal is to reduce shoplifting loss.  The less inventory loss a retailer experiences the more profit is realized with the same amount of revenue. Simple math, if a boutique retailer selling $1mil per year with a net profit of 3% and a shrink rate of 3% implements a loss prevention security system with security tags on clothes and cuts losses in half (very realistic if not conservative) the same amount of revenue results in a 4.5% net profit with a 1.5% in shrink.  Significant.

Clothing Security In Europe vs The U.S.

I just got back from a much-needed vacation in France and Germany. Even though I tried to shut down from work a bit, I found it difficult as we were doing a bit of window-shopping. What I saw amazed me. Shoplifting, use of a clothing alarm and clothing security by retailers is alive and breathing in Europe.

In fact it was unusual to see a retailer of any size that did not have some protection. It seems that European retailers have figured it out; proactive clothing security is the way to go if you want to make any money (or survive). I even saw a clothing alarm system in a shop that could not have been more that 200 square feet and one isle.

I saw security tags on clothes of every kind. Of course leather but they have in many cases gone down to a lower price point than I see in most U.S. retailers. What I heard is that “If you have a system, use it”. Clothing security was even being used on items with price points in the $1 – $2 area. This applied to both large and small retailers.

I did not see the use of as much CCTV as I thought I would have with clothing security . Major retailers had them in several locations but I would have thought the POS and all entrances would have been covered much more. Of course these cameras could have been hidden. We also have to keep in mind that the laws governing liability are different there. They are not as concerned about lawsuits.

What I wondered about was their use of a Loss Prevention Agent on the sales floor. My wife decided for me that testing the system was probably not a good idea!

But clothing security did seem to be a huge issue.  Retailers made use of everything we have here in the U.S. also such as lanyards, flex strings and keepers. I also saw a fair amount of ink tags. What I did not see is some of the more recent security tags on clothes like the new Checkpoint releases.  Clothing security tags there seemed to be on the larger size. Also clothing security tags in Europe use the same various lengths of pins that we do here.
