Using security tags on clothes to boost profits

Security tags on clothes not only deter shoplifting and prevent theft reducing shrink numbers, they also will boost net margins significantly.

Studies show that retailers who utilize security tags on clothes as part of an EAS (Electric Article Security) system see a significant reduction in shoplifting attempts and less shoplfter traffic in the stores because they simply move on to ther unprotected store.  The Checkpoint Systems manufactures the world’s marketshare leading EAS system.  These systems include pedestal antennas installed at doorways.  These antennas will detect security tags on clothes and alarm the system when the clothing security tags are in the field of the antennas, which naturally will cause  shoppers to pause or stop allowing the staff to address the issue.

Back to boosting profits, let’s say we have a boutique clothing retailer selling $1million per year.  Most likely if they have no loss prevention training or staff in place and are not using security tags on clothes they are losing about 5% to 10%.  So that number would be on the low side $50,000 per year in merchandise.  Typically that retailer will have a net margin of 2% to 5%.  Take the high number here and the net profit is $50,000.

It is typical to reduce shrink by at least 50% when going from no system in place to a loss prevention system in place.  So if the retailer goes from 5% shrink to 2.5% shrink, they add $25,000 to the net profit margin, whci is a 50% increase in net margin!

And the cost to install the Checkpoint system with security tags on clothes is a fraction of those number bringing a return on investment in a few months.

Is clothing security necessary for my business?

Retailers that sell clothing have to consider what type of clothing security they would like to use for their business.  There are many options out there for the business owner to choose from – from absolutely nothing to top of the line EAS systems.

Potential shoplifters look at such security measures when deciding whether or not to steal from your business.  They can be more alert and savvy than we give them credit for.  Clothing is an extremely common shoplifted item:  it can be easily concealed within a purse, in a coat pocket or even worn out of your store by the thief.  Utilizing clothing security is a smart business move that can substantially boost your business’s profits.

There are ways to remove or “beat” clothing security tags; ways that are easily found on the internet. This can be a challenging task for the thief, however, when he or she is within a retail environment with EAS alarms at the doors and employees just around the corner.  If a potential shoplifter notices that your items have a security device, they will move on to the next retailer that does not.  Clothing security is a win-win for minimal investment and it can have a tremendous impact on your net profit.

Alphas New Fashion2 Accessory Tag Clothing Alarm

As the clothing alarm arena is concerned Alpha a division of Checkpoint Systems has hit another home run. The new Fashion2 Accessory Tag solves a few issues that have been out there for some time in the Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) offerings.

These clothing security tags are designed for accessories like shoes, handbags, gloves, briefcases, luggage, belts, watches, hats and about anything else that traditional clothing security tags and pins would damage or not work on. If the item has a space or hole that the built in 3” lanyard could loop through then the problem is solved.

The lanyard attached back through the merchandise item and locks back into the hard tag clutch. The lanyard is made of plastic coated stranded aircraft cable, which makes it almost impossible to cut.

The Fashion2 is available in S3, Standard Lock and Super Lock clutch strengths. The S3 is a newer technology detacher that cannot not be duplicated.

The Fashion2 clothing alarm tag comes in three colors; black, gray and beige. These will blend in with almost any style garment. The Fashion2 is small, less than two inches long by 0.55” wide by 0.80” deep.

New Clothing Security Tag From Alpha, The New Ink Tag

Alpha a division of Checkpoint Systems has released the new Ink Tag. These new clothing security tags are awesome. They have set a new standard for security tags on clothes .

The new clothing security ink tag is two inches across its round flat shape. The tag is beige (RF) or gray (AM). It uses a concave shaped, transparent round head pin which makes life much more difficult for the shoplifter. And speaking of making a shoplifters life difficult Alpha has made this clothing security ink tag available in S3, standard and super lock clutch strengths. Now you can choose based on the existing detacher you may already have.

The new flat round design and round head pin makes it difficult for a shoplifter to get a good grip in order to try to forcibly remove it.

But here is the really great thing. The ink tag has the Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) technology built right in. The previous ink tags really acted as the pin to an EAS tag. This changes the game significantly. The new concept provides an overall lower tag profile. This lower profile also makes it much more difficult for a shoplifter to get a grip. These new clothing security tags will insure that many a shoplifter will need to go down the street to your competitor and leave you alone.

Alpha clothing security ink tags have two glass vials of ink, red and yellow. Normal handling and abuse by store staff will not cause the vials to break. But if a shoplifter attempts to forcibly remove the tag from the garment they shatter the vials and the ink spreads over the merchandise. Oh and by the way shoplifters beware; the ink formula has an anti-freeze in it. So even if you do manage to get the stolen item out of the store, put it in your freezer then try to remove it, sorry ink on you! Retailers have relied on security tags on clothes for the last 25 years to protect their merchandise.

Alpha Ink Tags come in quantities of 250.

Checkpoints Hot New Clothing Security Tags

Checkpoint has released several new clothing security tags this year. They are a breath of fresh air in the hard tag market. Given that the importers try to copy and in most cases do a very poor job of coping Checkpoints clothing security tags . I guess you know who the real leader is when everyone tries to copy you.

But lets get to the new tags. They three tags represent several different areas in the clothing security tags arena. This is clothing security on steroids.

First up is the G3. It has the same lines as the mini hard tag but has some visual and physical differences. The first thing you notice about the G3 is the color. It is a combination of off white and light gray. The colors are elegant and will clearly be a complement to any style clothing. The technology changes are first class and what you tend to expect from Checkpoint. The G3 is a physically stronger tag as if the original mini was not enough. The seam of the mini was on the side. The G3 has what I can only describe as a hidden seam. It makes these clothing security tags very tough. Checkpoint has also made the G3 a bit more aggressive in detection.

Next up is the pencil tag. It is a slim tag about two inches long and very thin. The lines are clean and it clearly is designed to take the wear and tear that clothing security tags must endure. This tag will virtually disappear on small clothing items such as ladies swim wear and lingerie.

Last but clearly not last in the offerings is the button tag. These clothing security tags are the hottest things that have been released in some time. It is round about 1.5” across. It is dark gray and has a height profile of about 0.5”. This is a very new tag design. The button tag is very compact and like the pencil tag will disappear on your merchandise. One of the best features is that the button tag is very difficult for the shoplifter to grip. Because of the round smooth lines and surface shoplifters will become very frustrated in their attempts to pull on them.

Both the G3 and the button tag have the raised ring that makes the pin extremely difficult to get at with cutters. All of the tags are well engineered and have smooth lines. They so not have any edges that will snag clothing including very delicate fabrics.

Clothing security tags boost profits

Retailers who use clothing security tags notice a boost in profits beyond expectations.  It is a simple yet often overlooked formula for figuring out the return on stopping retail shrinkage or inventory loss.  Simply divide the value of the lost merchandise by the net profit (not gross profit margin which is obviously much higher).

Example, a $35 stolen shirt with a net margin of three percent requires $1,166.67 in sales to recoup the loss.  Hard to believe isn’t it.  It is one of those “I don’t look at that because I don’t want to know” things.  Loosing one $35 item is not a $35 loss.  In order for the business to replace the items total retail value of $35 you will need a net profit of $35.  $35 divided by a net profit of 3% is $1,166.67.

So obviously a very powerful way to boost profit margins is to control losses and use products like clothing security tags to keep the merchandise on the rack.  If total losses is 5% in a $1mil per year clothing boutique the total lost merchandise is $50,000 per year.  Now look at that divided by the net margin and you will get $1.6mil.  If you can reduce your losses by a realistic 50% by using security tags on clothes you will be adding $25k to the profit margin.  I’ll leave that one to you to figure the boost in net margin…it is significant.

Clothing security tags for retailers

Out of curiosity I just typed in ” clothing security tags ” in Google and I was pretty surprised what I found. Eight out of the top ten listings were by thieves discussing how to remove the security tags.

So if you are a retailer reading this you may have found the same thing and realized it is tougher to find solutions than it is to find tips on how to steal.  This is a sad fact… retail crime is increasing and making it tougher for retailers to earn a good profit.

If you are looking for clothing security tags you will want to stay with genuine name brand parts such as Checkpoint Systems.  (Checkpoint Systems pencil tag pictured to the left) There are many cheaply manufactured copycat tags out there and you want to avoid those.  The cheap copies are easily broken or broken open and taken apart.  Also the cheaper copies have less effective internal parts that hold the pin in place on the security tags on clothes.

The Checkpoint tags have a new tougher clutch internally that grips the pin in a way that the harder you pull, the harder it grips.  The Checkpoint clothing security tags also are shaped in a way that trap the pins into them when attached making it impossible to get top the pin shaft.

Security Tags On Clothes That Make a Shoplifter Think Twice

Retail theft is a part of the retail store business. The retailer’s of the past used to just except theft as a part of life. It is a fact that retail theft drives the cost of merchandisehigher. The key to dealing with shoplifting is controlling it to a level that is acceptable (if there is such a thing). So how do we make shoplifters think twice and go somewhere else? Clothing alarm systems!

When you start talking about clothing security it gets even trickier to catch the shoplifter because many clothing thieves wear the shoplifted item out of the store as if it were their own. The good news is that retail can fight back against this type of shoplifting.

Clothing alarm systems are simple for the retail stores and their employees to use. The systems are also powerful enough to stop the criminals while being cost effective. There are many useful features and benefits to using clothing alarm systems.

Here is how these systems work: Clothing alarm tags are attached to merchandise and the antennas at the doors detect the tag when the shoplifter tries to exit. This system sets off an audible and visual alarm which alerts the retail employees.

Keep in mind this is only one of a clothing security systems many advantages. Features, like people counters, analytics, alarm management are now available. These systems are designed for one thing: reducing shoplifting!

A clothing alarm system makes it easy on the good guys and hard for the bad guys. It is not unusual for a system to reduce shoplifting by 60% or more.

Not All Clothing Security Tags Are Created Equal

Clothing security tags are a popular line of defense for retailers in the battle against shoplifters and there are many options available.  Not all clothing security tags are created equal though.

Checkpoint Systems is the world’s leading manufacturer of EAS (Electronic Article Surveillance) systems, which use radio frequency technology to detect security tags and labels on merchandise via sensors installed at doorways.  As with any industry the leader is always followed and there are many  clothing security tags and label copies manufactured overseas.

But buyers beware.  These slightly less expensive tags and labels do have negatives that need to be understood.  The most popular Checkpoint tags are the mini hard tags and the barcode labels:

The issues with the cheaper copies are something the average retailer would not really notice at first unless they did some extensive testing.  For example, 25% of the cheaper copies can be dead out of the box / will not set off the alarm.  The reason being there is no quality control on the imported cheapies…QC is an expensive process which affects the cost.  Checkpoint goes so far with their quality control that they actually test every label before it leaves the plant.  Any dead tags are marked with a red dot so that the customer knows to skip that label.  (All rolls of labels are guaranteed to have a minimum of 2,000 good labels).

The copycat mini hard tags are easy to spot.  First all Genuine Checkpoint products have their logo embossed on them.  Also, the fit and finish is very noticeably different.  The copies have a manufacturing seam that you can stick a small screwdriver or knife into and break open in seconds.  The Checkpoint seams are so tight they look like a molded one piece unit.

Just like anything else, you get what you pay for and  clothing security tags are no different.  For more information go to: clothing security tags or visit Loss Prevention Systems for continental US systems installations.

Clothing security tags with ink

Really cool clothing security tags

Imagine this, a shoplifter in your clothing area wants to steal a dress. They conceal the item and leave your store. They are not suspected or caught. Will they be back? Oh yeah!

Now imagine that when they get home (somewhere under a rock) that they pull out their prize and discover a Checkpoint Chekink tag attached. OK now what?

They will have to try to remove the clothing security tags forcefully. When they do, long before the tag is broken off the two vials of pressurized ink/dye rupture and spread on the dress. Because they are pressurized the ink does not just seep out.

But wait; let’s put the entire dress and Chekink tag in the freezer. Once we freeze the tag we try to then force it off. Sorry, we thought of that. The ink/dye in the glass vials are made with an anti-freeze solution. Oops, still pressurized and still liquid.

But what about accidents by store personnel? Wont we ruin merchandise sometimes? The amount of force to break the vials is pretty high and normal use does not pose a problem. Hit them with a hammer and we may have a problem. These are clothing security tags with a little something extra. Oh and by the way they work by themselves or with any checkpoint security system hard tag!
