The Many Efforts of Retailers to Stop Shoplifting

Is it easy to be anti shoplifting? Businesses since the beginning of retail have dreamed of ways to completely stop shoplifting. Honestly, without dramatically impacting sales in your stores, to stop shoplifting could be impossible.

However, there are ways to seriously put a damper on shoplifting activity in your stores. Stores looking to stop shoplifting must look at retail anti theft devices. Retail anti theft devices offer stores the benefit of securing merchandise and the avenues to becoming anti shoplifting.

As a loss prevention professional, I have been very successful at implementing retail theft prevention methods designed to help stop shoplifting. At the top of my list are retail anti theft devices such as Checkpoint security tags and Checkpoint labels. Truly, as important as properly displaying merchandise, making sure it is protected is equally important to secure profits in your stores.

Working loss prevention in stores selling a range of merchandise, I have seen the negative impacts of stores not utilizing Checkpoint Security tags and Checkpoint labels. In some cases, I feel the store is somewhat negligent and encouraging shoplifting because they either refuse to use retail anti theft devices or simply believe retail theft prevention is not important. A big misconception by retailers is that if they sell merchandise quickly, they’ll eliminate the acts of shoplifting.

In reality, retail theft prevention is a must for any retailer looking to grow their business and help reduce the amount of loss they certainly will experience. When I visit stores, I always look for the manager who can speak realistically about the business of their stores. Any business manager worth their salt knows how retail theft prevention plays a huge part in their profits.

Walk your stores. Take a serious assessment of your needs. Do you have shoplifters (yes you do). Do you need merchandise security (yes you do!)

Security Tags on Clothes Offers Great Physical Deterrence

It’s true; security tags on clothes do offer physical deterrence. It interesting to me when I see new retailers selling clothing, yet have no form of clothing security.  I mean, really, security tags on clothes are cost effective, offer the visual deterrence needed to fend off the average thief and offer great protection against the pro’s with the tools. Why would you not use security tags on clothes?

The only rationale I can find is that some retailers are afraid of the initial cost of instituting a clothing security program. However, you have to look at the long term potential of a clothing security program. No one starts a clothing business expecting to close in just a few years. Just the same, you shouldn’t start a clothing business without clothing security.

In the many years I’ve worked loss prevention, I have seen only one business close. The closure was a direct result of merchandise loss. The owner ran a somewhat initially successful apparel retail chain of 4 stores. His model provided great merchandise and target low to moderate level incomes. In the areas he opened stores; crime rates were much higher than other areas. Yet, the owner felt it was unnecessary to implement clothing security. He felt a uniformed security guard would more benefit the store than security tags on clothes and a clothing alarm. Unfortunately, he could not see how security tags on clothes provide a visual and physical deterrence to thieves. Eventhough clothing security tags and a clothing alarm could offer a dramatic decrease in the amount of clothing loss he was experiencing, he refused to listen.

Had our efforts to provide his business with clothing security tags been successful, I’m certain his business would be thriving today. Now, understand, clothing security tags are not the “be all, end all”, but they do help prevent loss. In fact, one the biggest reasons, in my opinion, that large box clothing retailers have been successful in sales is a direct result of the merchandise protection they receive from clothing security tags.

Prevent Shoplifting at Your Business

Each type of retail business has to develop its own unique approach to control or prevent shoplifting.  There is no “one size fits all” solution because of the diversity of merchandise, packaging, location, and methods of display used by retailers.

Although every retail business will experience shoplifting, a men’s suit retailer will take a different approach than a furniture store.  Where most of the suit seller’s inventory will be vulnerable, the furniture store would concentrate on accessories.  (It’s difficult to fit a love seat into a booster bag.)  Some home improvement centers leave their potting soil outside overnight, something they would never do with power tools, because the shrink rate for bulk dirt is low.

The degree to which a retailer should take steps to prevent shoplifting requires an analysis of the all-important shrink figures, what specific merchandise is being stolen, a determination of what is acceptable (shoplifting can’t be stopped, only controlled), and what it will cost to reach the desired result.  The cost of the cure for shoplifting must justify the expenditure by reducing shoplifting enough to pay for the investment and continue preventing losses related to customer theft.

For companies that don’t have their own loss prevention or asset protection departments, the task of choosing the most efficient and economical methods to prevent shoplifting falls to the owners and management of the business.  While retailers may be experts in merchandise, marketing and sales, they frequently are not aware of the availability of some new method or technology that will make the job easier to accomplish.

Depending on the circumstances, it may be advisable to call in a specialist in loss prevention to assist and advise of the best and most effective ways to economically get shoplifting under control and still not intimidate legitimate shoppers.

No matter what type of retail business you have, you can benefit by an objective assessment from a professional to help you prevent shoplifting.

When should I call for a Corporate Fraud Investigator?

Loss Prevention Systems  experienced Employee theft investigator ‘s  are known for having conducted thousands of varying employee theft investigation ‘s for all types of companies. Large companies with experienced senior staff and the smallest of companies that are less than 5 employees, any company that suspected internal theft. One problem that we consistently see with all of them is that clients don’t call us untill it is late in the process. It is not an issue for us but it normally does cost the client more. Because we generally have to start over with much of the investigation.

Most people including some of the most savvy business people I have ever met are like a fish out of water in these situations. Because of this they do not know how to build proper corporate fraud investigation s. And because they all watch CSI, they try to be their own employee theft investigator. It is not like what we see on TV, far from it.

Our job is to build a thorough corporate fraud investigation, which will prevail with civil, and criminal courts and serve to effectively block unemployment claim if the client so desires. Most company executives are frustrated in these situations because they are missing a key business element that they must have to make their every day business decisions. That is control. They do not know what to do. We provide and therefore restore that sense of and actual control.

Why not just call the police or FBI you ask? They have a staff of professional investigators. They have the skills. Of course they do. But as anyone in my field knows the chances of getting law enforcement to do this type of corporate fraud investigation is like playing the lottery. It isn’t that they do not want to or do not have the skill. The fact is that there are too many investigations assigned to them and they cannot actually work one to the extent necessary to get the investigation where it need to go. The average police detective in the U.S. is assigned 40 +/- investigations in a thirty-day period. They are civil servants and work a 40-hour workweek. How many of those 40 investigations do you really think get worked?

On the other side we at LPSI assign a single corporate fraud investigator per investigation. That corporate fraud investigator will work on it from start to finish and that time frame is short depending on the case. Even complicated ones. Most of the delays we experience is the client trying to catch up with us.

SO when should you call? Save yourself some money and call right away before you start firing people, calling the police and defiantly before the losses and investigation becomes water cooler gossip.

Have Low Shrink and a Good Inventory with Checkpoint Systems

If you business is one that takes an inventory of your merchandise once a year, you know that it takes just one poor inventory to shatter the morale and resolve of your store employees.  Along with that is the obvious side effect of lower profit, and undo loss attributed to shrink.  Climbing back up from that low point can be difficult and challenging.

Before your business sinks to that level, anti shoplifting strategies such as Checkpoint Security Systems can be considered.  Retail anti theft devices such as this have proven to reduce loss due to shrink, thus making merchandise better available for the honest, paying customers.

Checkpoint security tags and Checkpoint labels are affixed to your high theft merchandise.  These anti shoplifting measures offer a visual deterrent to the potential shoplifter, and also sound an alarm should they pass through your business’s doors without the item having been purchased.  Investing in a Checkpoint security system is a way to take a proactive approach to reducing your losses, before the results of your yearly inventory scream at you to do something to protect your business.

Retail theft prevention is a direct component in how well your store will inventory.  If you have a large amount of merchandise that is being stolen, by customers or even employees, then that loss results in lost profit for your business.  While there are other factors that contribute to shrink, anti shoplifting measures such as Checkpoint security systems can counter the stolen portion of your shrink numbers.  Checkpoint systems make merchandise more difficult to steal, allowing it to be in stock for your customers to purchase.

Your business can stay one step ahead of the shoplifters, and thus one step ahead of the competition, by protecting your merchandise with Checkpoint security systems.

Innovative Bottle Security Removes Frustration – Atlanta Georgia

Bottle security has been an issue that has caused plenty of frustration among stores that sell bottled spirits and wine.  The frustration comes when the owner or manager is walking the floor to re-order, or a vendor turns in an order and he finds himself ordering product that he hasn’t sold.  The reason he is having to order replenishment for unsold merchandise is that the store has been hit by thieves.

Shoplifters being what they are, generally go after the most expensive brands.  After all, if you’re stealing, why not steal the best?

Also frustrating is finding several bottles on display that have been opened and tasted, sniffed, or sampled.  A bottle without an intact tax stamp goes back to the storeroom.

Alpha Security, a manufacturer of security products including innovative bottle locks that keep the tops on the bottles until the clerk removes them, provides the solution to these liquor bottle security problems.

Not only do the bottle locks prevent the removal of the bottle tops, they can also provide even more liquor bottle security by preventing the product from leaving the store with the bottle lock attached.  Some models have an EAS tag imbedded in the bottle lock itself so that when used in conjunction with an EAS system, an alarm is sounded whenever someone attempts to take out merchandise protected by liquor bottle security tops.  Only an employee with a proprietary key can remove bottle locks.

Alpha Security, manufacturer of security products for various lines of merchandise, relieves the frustration of missing merchandise with its selection of EASy bottle products that keep the merchandise in the store and the top on until it is sold.

EASy bottle bottle security allows the customer to handle the merchandise from an open display and read the labels when comparing products for selection.  High value/popular items will no longer be displayed behind the counter or in a locked display.  Merchants can display even the most expensive wines openly when the bottle is protected with bottle locks from Alpha Security.

Frustration goes down and profits go up with liquor bottle security.

Inventory looking slim? Maybe it’s time for Clothing Security.

We all know that June inventory is coming up and some of us are dreading it. Your employees have been finding more tags on the ground, empty hangers on the sales floor, even mismatched clothing sets. You’re dreading those inventory numbers.

Have you thought about implementing Clothing Security in your store? There are many forms of Clothing Security out there; the best ones, however, use paper thin clothing security tags and a clothing alarm to stop shoplifters in their tracks. Security tags on clothes are small hard plastic clothing tags that are nearly impossible to remove without a special key kept next to your registers.

You have probably noticed clothing tags on your floor or shoved into shelves and empty hangers. Unfortunately, shoplifters have realized that you aren’t using clothing security tags and you are an easy target. They run no risk of being seen attempting to remove the clothing security tags and you aren’t using a clothing alarm to sound off with they take your merchandise. The only way to stop this loss now is to start taking it seriously.

You need to invest in clothing alarm going off and alerting everyone in the store that they’re trying to walk out with active security tags on clothes. It’s a small investment to protect your inventory and let shoplifters know you are no longer the easy target they’re after!

Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase clothing security ad a clothing alarm.

How can you afford to not prevent shoplifting?

Some retailers I have dealt with claim that they can’t afford to prevent shoplifting. They don’t see why they should spend the money on anti shoplifting devices and training for their employees. They don’t think they need to prevent shoplifting because they don’t think it’s really a problem.

The sad part is these retailers often don’t realize they were wrong until inventory time. Lets say you find packaging for a $10.00 bracelet shoved in a shelf. Someone has obviously taken this product. After you figure in the net markup for this product (Including your bills and payroll which is usually 2% for most retialers). To make up the cost of loss for the $10.00 bracelet you would have to sell 50 of the same $10.00 bracelet. Don’t believe me? Check the math!

$10.00 / 0.02= $500.00

Now when you think about it, think about how many packages for $10.00 bracelets or wrappers for $20.00 dvd’s or tags for $50.00 dresses you’ve found this year. Can you really afford to not prevent shoplifting in your store?

The cost to prevent shoplifting can be incredibly low compared to the cost of theft. If you spend an extra $100.00 of payroll to take the time to train your employees on how to spot a shoplifter you could save hundreds! Everything from an open merchandising floor plan to simply greeting every one of your customers can deter shoplifters from your business. Even further, if you spend a few hundred on retail anti theft devices you can save thousands.

When you look at it this way, don’t you think it’s time to prevent shoplifting in any way you can?

Employee Theft – What You Don’t Know Will Hurt You – Atlanta Georgia

There are a couple of common denominators in over 90% of the employee theft cases that I’ve been involved in as a corporate fraud investigator over the years, and they are 1) The perpetrator held a position of trust; and 2) The thief started taking small amounts and became bolder as he continued to steal and stole more and more until he was caught.

A business owner who undertakes his own employee theft investigation does so from a position of having an employer/employee relationship with the people he suspects may be stealing from him.  Although the employee may see his actions as being taken against an impersonal company, the company owner or manager sees it as a personal affront, in effect taking money out of the employer’s own pocket.  This is not the best place from which to impartially look at a potential internal theft situation, as emotions are likely to enter into a situation that requires an objective look to remain impartial.

The employer often has a tendency to rush into the employee theft investigation to find the guilty party, confront them, and get them out of the business.  Haste in this case can be costly because early into the investigation, there is undeveloped knowledge about both the depth and the scope of the employee theft.  How many are involved and how long have they been doing it?  These are important questions that need to be asked and answered for the health of the business.

All the employees who were involved in the theft and all who knew about it and didn’t speak up should be disciplined and separated from the company.

A corporate fraud investigator is frequently called upon to investigate cases of internal theft, whether it’s money, merchandise, company property, or even intellectual property.

The corporate fraud investigator has a good working knowledge of business operations based on experience in both investigations and exposing vulnerabilities in the operations of different types of businesses through audits and policy formulation.

The causes of internal theft can be complex and not the result of a single employee, and the corporate fraud investigator is experienced and qualified to get to the root cause of the problem and fine a viable solution for the business, whether it’s a hole in the procedure or out and out employee theft.
