Whether they want to steal one bottle or 20 – protect your liquor with bottle security

I read about two ladies who stole 15 bottles of vodka from a business.  The next day, they stole four more bottles from a different business, concealing the bottles in their purses.  Later they came back to that same business and attempted a walkout of another large stash of vodka, hiding bottles under their purses.  Security guards attempted to stop them but they ran, leaving behind the vodka and their purses.  Later police stopped them in their vehicle, and they had a car load of vodka…and a retail theft citation from that same day from being caught at yet another store.

Shoplifters are sometimes slow learners, and this is evident in this case of liquor thefts.  Even though they were caught shoplifting that same day, they were stealing liquor again.  Apparently they felt nothing could stop their crime spree.

There are options available to stores that sell liquor to protect their products.  Bottle security devices, like  EASy bottle bottle locks by Alpha Security, easily fit on the top of your high end wines and liquors and make them nearly impossible to open by an unauthorized person.  The bottle lock system is only removed when the bottle is purchased, and can be reused on other bottles displayed on your sales floor.

Bottle locks and EASy Bottle liquor bottle security by Alpha Security are a deterrent to thieves like the ladies mentioned above.  Shoplifters do not want to risk setting off alarms when they steal your merchandise, and they especially don’t want to risk exposure by taking the time to try and remove a bottle lock from the liquor bottle that they are attempting to steal.

Using liquor bottle security, it is easy to display your products openly so that they are available for your paying customers.  Shoplifters like these ladies can move on to the next unsecured business for their crime spree and leave your business, the one with bottle security, alone.

How to out think a thief…it’s not that hard.

Here are a few thoughts that might pass through a potential shoplifter’s mind when you have a clothing security system.

Just the fact that you have a clothing alarm system will visually deter a high percentage of shoplifters. When a casual shoplifter walks into your store and notices that you have a clothing security system, they probably won’t even attempt to steal from you. They will go to a store that does not have an Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) system or security tags on clothes.

For the savvier thief, they might test to see if the clothing alarm system will alarm if an item that has not been purchased presented to the system. These people will take an item that they are potentially going to steal and walk by the system without trying to leave, to see if the system will alarm. If you were to have a “dummy” system at your front door to only visually deter people, this is where it would fail you. Once one person knows that your system does not work properly, then you might as well put a sign up saying that it doesn’t. Thieves will tell their friends and the word will spread through the underbelly of society quicker than you can imagine.

When the clothing security system passes the test and goes into alarm the shoplifter will realize that they have brought attention to themselves and probably return the item to the nearest shelf and leave. The only option that the shoplifter would have left is to try and remove the clothing security tags. Security tags on clothes are not easily removed and can draw attention to the illegal act that they are trying to perform.

This is why clothing alarm systems, combined with an attentive and knowledgeable staff will allow you to watch your retail loss shrink in front of your very eyes.

Tips and Tricks to Prevent Shoplifting

Sometimes it is the little things that can become big ways to prevent shoplifting. A primary example is to arrange your shelving and displays to maximize the viewing area for your cashiers. For locations that are tougher to see you can use convex mirrors or cameras that are attached to monitors located at the front of your store.

Shoplifters prefer not to be seen and if you are not careful you could create a great environment for theft without realizing. If you keep everything open and long line of sights, a potential shoplifter will feel as though they cannot move without being seen by someone.

Another thing to remember is to keep your less expensive items close to the doors and the more expensive items further away. This will make it tougher for the shoplifting “track stars” that instead of trying to be stealthy, prefer to grab and item and 40 yd dash out your front door.

Also, having helpful and friendly personnel great all of your customers can greatly reduce shoplifting as well. When an employee makes eye contact and greets your customers, it will make your paying customers feel welcomer but will also make your thieves realize that there is now someone who can identify them.

If you find yourself still losing too much profit to people with sticky fingers, I would recommend purchasing an Electronic Article Surveillance system or as I like to call it, “one of those things that go beep beep beep when someone steals something” system. With one of these systems, you tag the merchandise that you do not want stolen and if someone tries to, even the track star, the system will alarm and let you and your associates know that a piece of merchandise is leaving the store when it shouldn’t.

Employee Theft: An Unauthorized Benefit in Atlanta Georgia

Employee theft often comes as a surprise and a shock to a business owner who discovers that he’s become a victim.  The employer frequently feels betrayed, particularly if the theft occurred from a small business, because the thief is someone almost like family, well liked and trusted.  The employer thinks that here is someone who he gave a job to, paid a fair wage, advised and trained and is repaid by having money taken from his pocket by a thief.

So why do employees steal and what can an employer do to soften the blow?  First the employer should know whom he is hiring.  Even if the applicant is Aunt Fanny’s preacher’s cousin, the wise employer is going to check his background and talk to some former employers.  Ask the right questions during the interview to be sure the applicant is going to fit in to the organization with as little baggage as possible.

Employees may steal to support a habit – alcohol, drugs, gambling, boy or girlfriends; there may be a legitimate need for more money – illness, fire, accident, or some other tragedy; there may be simple greed – just wanting things that aren’t affordable; perceived injustice – an expected raise that doesn’t come through, a disciplinary action, or reduction in hours.  Any number of things may cause and employee to steal from work.  After all, what easier place is there to steal from than one the thief is familiar with and everyone knows and trusts him?

Because an owner can’t be everywhere at once, and because a certain amount of delegation is necessary, employee theft is going to happen.

What does an owner do if he suspects internal theft may be going on?  As hard as it will be to do, the problem must be faced objectively.  In the words of Deputy Barney Fife of Mayberry, “You’ve got to nip it… Nip it in the bud!”

An employee theft investigation is a specialized type of criminal investigation that requires a certain kind of mindset to conduct.  The loss prevention investigator is part cop, part businessman, and part auditor.  He or she will gather and assess the evidence of the crime, whether it’s merchandise or money.  After that, a plan of action might be surveillance, witness interviews, or maybe interviews with those suspected of the criminal acts.

Frequently, it’s better for a business owner to use a qualified loss prevention investigator to conduct the employee theft investigation as an objective outside and experienced source.  The loss prevention investigator will advise the owner of the steps that can and should be taken to bring the investigation to a successful conclusion, from restitution to prosecution, efficiently and economically.

Clothing Security Solutions Provide Solid Sales

Sales, Sales, Sales … and Clothing security. That’s the traditional thought of many retailers. Although for some reason, some managers still do not see the true value of Clothing security.

Convincing business owners and managers of the advantages of clothing security can be a challenge. Many, as is appropriate, get stuck in the sales, sales, sales mode yet forget that as equally important is clothing security. Having no merchandise in their stores to sell is the biggest negative impact retailers can face. Clothing security can be the solution, but the mindset of the retailers has to be one outside of the box.

Security tags on clothes offer a wide range of protection for the merchant. From a shoplifter’s standpoint, they want ease and convenience. They want to be able to get in and out of a store with little friction. Simply observing security tags on clothes will immediately deter many potential thieves. Security tags on clothes are solid little devices position on clothing for the convenience of the customer, the convenience of the sales associate and the inconvenience of the dirt bag looking to clear your racks. As a loss prevention professional, I can tell you many stories of retailers wanting to sell merchandise without security tags on clothes. Many times, I have seen these businesses continue to sell merchandise having no security tags on clothes and actually believing they are staying profitable. Yet when the inventory results are returned, they get a rude awakening.

Protecting your sales falls in line with protecting your profits, clothing security tags are a must in any retailer selling clothing. It’s almost reckless for a business to display merchandise without clothing security tags… it’s an invitation to thieves. Think of it this way, if you are one of those stubborn retailers wanting hold out. When a thief walks into a business with clothing security tags, 9 times out of 10, they will walk out and look for the easy mark, or the store without clothing security tags.

Checkpoint Systems “For Dummies” (part II)

There is the possibility of a Checkpoint security system going into alarm without someone actually stealing something. This is because Checkpoint systems are tuned and manufactured to alarm when they see 8.2 MHz. While it is a unique frequency, many things in an environment can produce, if only for a moment, the frequency the system is trying to receive. Let’s go back to the analogy of the radio in your car. Sometimes when you are driving and you pass underneath the big high voltage power lines or a semi-truck passes you, you will here static on your radio. The same is true for Checkpoint security systems. “Static” on occasion could cause a system to false alarm but instead of it being high voltage power lines it could be the vibration in the electric door.

Checkpoint labels are made up of a coil of metal specifically designed to alarm Checkpoint security systems. Any merchandise that does not have Checkpoint labels attached to them will not alarm if stolen. I know this might seem silly to some people but there is an assumption by some that an electronic article surveillance system has the ability to “know” when an item has or has not been purchased. These Checkpoint systems are not integrated directly to the point of sale or use telepathy to determine whether or not an item has been properly purchased.

Once someone has placed Checkpoint labels on the merchandise of their choosing, that item will alarm the Checkpoint security system if not deactivated. The deactivation process takes place at the point of sale. What happens is a deactivation device is placed under the counter or inside the scanner of a cash register. This device emits an RF field similar to that of the Checkpoint security systems antennas at the front door. Unlike the field at the front, this field is significantly stronger but in a more confined space. When a label passes through the invisible field, the RF energy being created causes the coil of metal inside the label to be physically altered. Once this has taken place the Checkpoint labels are no longer at 8.2 MHz and will no longer alarm a Checkpoint security system.

Don’t steal from me! I have bottle security

To steal or not to steal.  That is the question.  If your business sells liquor and wine, you might have people contemplating this question on a daily basis within your business.

It’s a wise business move to help thieves answer this question by implementing bottle security.   EASy bottle bottle locks from Alpha Security fit on the top of your high end liquors and wines, preventing shoplifters from opening bottles.  So not only can you now display these products openly for customers to browse, you no longer have to worry about someone opening them in the store and taking a drink and thereby ruining the product.

Bottle locks are a visual merchandising friendly theft deterrent easily visible to possible shoplifters.  EASy Bottle products are a small plastic cap that locks onto the top of a bottle to keep it from being open. A bottle lock can only be removed by a key at the register. Thieves steal a bottle of liquor in order to drink it, not to fight with it for hours in order to get it open.  Those that wish to steal will probably move on to a business that does not have bottle security.  Why waste the time and risk exposure fighting a bottle lock?

Shoplifters are coming into your business, guaranteed.  Are they going to try to get a quick drink in the back of your store, or pocket a bottle in their coat and leave?  Are they going to push out a shopping cart full of liquor and wine?

Reducing your risk of theft and loss due to shoplifting will increase your profits, your inventory accuracy, and allow you to display your liquors and wines for your honest customers.  Bottle security, like bottle locks, will assist you with this task.  Help thieves answer the question of whether or not to steal from you by using bottle locks on all of your high end liquors and wines.

Big Store/Small Store: Prevent Shoplifting

The big box stores seem to have unlimited resources to devote to ways to prevent shoplifting, from a dedicated staff of loss prevention professionals to buying and using the latest and greatest retail theft prevention devices.

The “Mom and Pop” retail operations are able to everything the major retailers can do, although they have to do it on a smaller and more economical scale.

Although there may be no budget for a loss prevention staff, the duties of LP can be allocated among the other employees: management, sales, and stock.  Have both a prevention plan to deter shoplifters and an action plan so that everyone knows what to do if there is an actual shoplifting event occurring.  Be sure that everyone, especially management, knows what to do and takes part in the effort to prevent and detect shoplifting.

Prevention is the preferred way to avoid shoplifting losses, as opposed to recovering the stolen merchandise from the shoplifter, as it avoids confrontations and unpleasant situations occurring on the sales floor.  Not all shoplifters will go quietly to the office to talk the incident over.

One of the best and most painless ways to get a shoplifter’s attention and let him know that there are better places to steal is with the purchase and use of Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) by Checkpoint Security Systems.  This is the equalizer between the large stores and the smaller operations.

The placement of the Checkpoint Security Systems antennas at the customer entrance/exit serves as a deterrent to any potential thief because it announces that this store takes shoplifting seriously by it presence.  The shoplifter will realize that his chances of being caught just went up exponentially.

All merchandise is protected either by Checkpoint tags or Checkpoint labels.  When the merchandise passes through the antennas with an active tag or label, an alarm sounds, alerting staff to attend to the customer who is exiting the store.  This is done in a low key, quiet manner, so as to not attract the attention of other shoppers.  The Checkpoint tags and Checkpoint labels can only be removed or deactivated by sales clerks at the point of sale with specialized equipment.

Shoplifters know Checkpoint Security Systems and avoid retail businesses that use them.  If a rat has a choice of taking the cheese that is in a trap or cheese that isn’t, which do you think he would choose?

Prevent shoplifting at your location and send the shoplifters on to other stores bu using Checkpoint Systems equipment.

Clothing Security Tags Save the Bottom Line

That’s right, clothing security tags actually save the bottom line. Sure, the initial investment for a clothing security tags program is pricey, but your business is worth it. If you were planning to keep your doors open for only 5 years, I’d tell you “Why waste your money?” However, we both know your plan is to keep the doors open for many years to come and beyond. Clothing security tags help you keep those doors open.

Looking over the salesfloor of a recent apparel stores roll out of clothing security tags, I could almost feel the change in the air. The clothing security tags had finally been installed, and the employees and management were proud of their work. Clothing security had been somewhat nonexistent at this company and in fact they were losing thousands of dollars to theft and loss in the form of shrink each year. Employees and customer alike complained to the managers about the lack of clothing security, but their concerns fell on deaf ears. Security tags on clothes were too expensive, or there was no real value to having a clothing security program, according to them. In profitability meeting, it was pretty obvious the store was being cleaned out, whether by customers or employees; the absence of clothing security was showing its self on the P&L. The reaction, although delayed initially, was enacted and security tags on clothes were ordered throughout the store. Finally, clothing security program was here.

As word spread throughout the store and the local community of the stores security program and the fact security tags on clothes now made it more difficult to get out of the store unchallenged, the loss was significantly reduced. In the next P&L meeting, the management was able to show solid proof through inventory results, that security tags on clothes was the right choice and their proactive security strategy paid off.
