Whether they want to steal one bottle or 20 – protect your liquor with bottle security

I read about two ladies who stole 15 bottles of vodka from a business.  The next day, they stole four more bottles from a different business, concealing the bottles in their purses.  Later they came back to that same business and attempted a walkout of another large stash of vodka, hiding bottles under their purses.  Security guards attempted to stop them but they ran, leaving behind the vodka and their purses.  Later police stopped them in their vehicle, and they had a car load of vodka…and a retail theft citation from that same day from being caught at yet another store.

How to out think a thief…it’s not that hard.

Here are a few thoughts that might pass through a potential shoplifter’s mind when you have a clothing security system.

Just the fact that you have a clothing alarm system will visually deter a high percentage of shoplifters. When a casual shoplifter walks into your store and notices that you have a clothing security system, they probably won’t even attempt to steal from you. Tips and Tricks to Prevent Shoplifting

Sometimes it is the little things that can become big ways to prevent shoplifting. A primary example is to arrange your shelving and displays to maximize the viewing area for your cashiers. For locations that are tougher to see you can use convex mirrors or cameras that are attached to monitors located at the front of your store.

 Shoplifters prefer not to be seen and if you are not careful you could create a great environment for theft without realizing. If you keep everything open and long line of sights, a potential shoplifter will feel as though they cannot move without being seen by someone.

 Another thing to remember is to keep your less expensive items close to the doors and the more expensive items further away. This will make it tougher for the shoplifting “track stars” that instead of trying to be stealthy, prefer to grab and item and 40 yd dash out your front door.

 Also, having helpful and friendly personnel great all of your customers can greatly reduce shoplifting as well. When an employee makes eye contact and greets your customers, it will make your paying customers feel welcomer but will also make your thieves realize that there is now someone who can identify them.

Employee Theft: An Unauthorized Benefit in Atlanta Georgia

Because an owner can’t be everywhere at once, and because a certain amount of delegation is necessary, employee theft is going to happen.

What does an owner do if he suspects internal theft may be going on?  As hard as it will be to do, the problem must be faced objectively.  In the words of Deputy Barney Fife of Mayberry, “You’ve got to nip it… Nip it in the bud!”

An employee theft investigation is a specialized type of criminal investigation that requires a certain kind of mindset to conduct.  The loss prevention investigator is part cop, part businessman, and part auditor.  He or she will gather and assess the evidence of the crime, whether it’s merchandise or money.  After that, a plan of action might be surveillance, witness interviews, or maybe interviews with those suspected of the criminal acts.

Checkpoint Systems “For Dummies” (part II)

There is the possibility of a Checkpoint security system going into alarm without someone actually stealing something. This is because Checkpoint systems are tuned and manufactured to alarm when they see 8.2 MHz. While it is a unique frequency, many things in an environment can produce, if only for a moment, the frequency the system is trying to receive. Let’s go back to the analogy of the radio in your car. Sometimes when you are driving and you pass underneath the big high voltage power lines or a semi-truck passes you, you will here static on your radio. The same is true for Checkpoint security systems. “Static” on occasion could cause a system to false alarm but instead of it being high voltage power lines it could be the vibration in the electric door.

Checkpoint labels are made up of a coil of metal specifically designed to alarm Checkpoint security systems. Any merchandise that does not have Checkpoint labels attached to them will not alarm if stolen. I know this might seem silly to some people but there is an assumption by some that an electronic article surveillance system has the ability to “know” when an item has or has not been purchased. These Checkpoint systems are not integrated directly to the point of sale or use telepathy to determine whether or not an item has been properly purchased.

Once someone has placed Checkpoint labels on the merchandise of their choosing, that item will alarm the Checkpoint security system if not deactivated. The deactivation process takes place at the point of sale. What happens is a deactivation device is placed under the counter or inside the scanner of a cash register. This device emits an RF field similar to that of the Checkpoint security systems antennas at the front door. Unlike the field at the front, this field is significantly stronger but in a more confined space. When a label passes through the invisible field, the RF energy being created causes the coil of metal inside the label to be physically altered. Once this has taken place the Checkpoint labels are no longer at 8.2 MHz and will no longer alarm a Checkpoint security system.

Big Store/Small Store: Prevent Shoplifting

The big box stores seem to have unlimited resources to devote to ways to prevent shoplifting, from a dedicated staff of loss prevention professionals to buying and using the latest and greatest retail theft prevention devices.

The “Mom and Pop” retail operations are able to everything the major retailers can do, although they have to do it on a smaller and more economical scale.
