Developing an Anti Shoplifting Attitude

Why does a retail business owner make it a priority to develop an anti shoplifting attitude among his employees and how can he make it happen.

The unfortunate storeowner who experiences a financial shock when reading the results of his latest physical inventory and realizes that he has inexplicably lost 7 to 10% of his stock to theft, paperwork errors, or lack of control.

Shoplifting certainly contributes a large portion of all shortage, and is one of the most difficult to control.  An all out anti shoplifting effort is needed to prevent shoplifting losses from eating up all the profits.

Management should talk up shoplifting prevention at every opportunity: Store rallies, departmental meetings, paycheck inserts, bulletin boards, training sessions, new hire orientations, time clock messages – anywhere that it’s appropriate to bring it up.  Highlight anti shoplifting efforts of individual employees, whether she used excellent customer service to deter a potential shoplifter, or pointed out a known shoplifter to management, or simply had a great loss prevention idea by recognizing them and rewarding them if appropriate.

Devote an entire store meeting to an anti shoplifting theme pointing out the costs of shoplifting, how to handle a potential shoplifter situation, characteristics of shoplifters, and how shoplifting can affect them personally in the way of decreased salaries, benefits, and even job loss because of decreased profits attributed to shoplifters.

Provide the store and staff the equipment it needs to make a serious dent in the shoplifter traffic at your location.  Convex mirrors, CCTV systems, and EAS by Checkpoint Security Systems are some of the ways to both prevent and detect shoplifting at your location.

But even with the most sophisticated electronic measures in place to prevent shoplifting, the most important asset to have is an alert, attentive, and engaged staff.

Theft Deterrance with Bottle Security

While shoplifting has been around forever, the technology that can help prevent the theft of your merchandise has not.  Businesses in this current day and age of technology can benefit from the many advancements that have been made in the field of loss prevention.

Stores that sell wine and liquor now also have options to help keep their merchandise secure.  New Liquor bottle security, including the advanced EASy bottle bottle lock system from Alpha Security, may be applied to your high theft and expensive wines and liquors.  This form of bottle lock simply fits over the top of the bottle and prevents the bottle being opened prior to being purchased.  Store employees remove the bottle locks after the item is paid for.

A bottle lock placed on your high end bottle of wine or liquor does not deter from the presentation of the merchandise, but it does deter theft.  A would-be shoplifter sees the liquor bottle security at the top of the bottle and will more than likely decide to take his shoplifting elsewhere.  Shoplifters do not want to get caught and therefore do not want to spend time trying to figure out how to remove the bottle locks.

Shoplifters, especially those stealing wine and liquor, want immediate gratification for their efforts.  Advanced bottle security like Alpha Security ‘s EASy bottle cap can make that goal unrealistic for the potential shoplifter, often forcing them to move on to the next business who does not utilize bottle locks to thwart their efforts.

This technology also allows the business owner to display his high end products openly so that customers can shop them, read labels, etc.  This is preferable to having these items behind a counter or in a locked case, and an increase in sales will result.  This, coupled with decreased loss due to theft, makes the technology in bottle security more than worth the investment.

Security Tags On Clothes Keeps Manager On Notice

Security tags on clothes make a great impression on your store. As a loss prevention manager, I enjoy walking into stores and seeing a well organized and executed clothing security program. Security tags on clothes give the impression of control and really showcase the stores management, sales team and organization. What customer wouldn’t want to shop in a store like that? Clothing security, when just thrown together, can really negatively impact a store. When you have clothing security programs which may have old, or home made features, it gives the store a sense of desperation. Considering your future profits, it’s important to keep up to date with clothing security and protect your merchandise appropriately.

One my favorite clothing security devices has to be the clothing alarm. As a manager, a clothing alarm is really cool. I enjoying watching for potential thieves and observing the look of surprise on their face as the clothing alarm activates, making an audible alarm. Immediately, the thief gets rid of the merchandise or tries to silence the clothing alarm by placing their hand over the tag. Extremely difficult, to defeat, the thief realizes this, drops the merchandise and flees the store. Security tags on clothes are a great way to protect your merchandise and a great way to secure your profits.

If a clothing alarm is something you’re not ready for, security tags on clothes are a must. You don’t want the attention unprotected retailers get from thieves. Besides the negative attention, the impression of control gives your profits the extra boost they need to maintain your business.

Placing security tags on clothes is my recommendation to you and to any retailer looking to protect their merchandise, boost their profits and keep up their stores appearance.

Decisions to Prevent Shoplifting – Atlanta Georgia

No one is in a better position to make decisions about solutions to prevent shoplifting than the affected business owner.  These decisions should never be made without a complete analysis of the factors that caused the inventory shrinkage problem and gaining all the information he can possibly obtain.  This is a decision that should not be made by the seat of the pants.

The cause of the problem may be obvious.  Management may receive reports from employees or even customers that have witnessed theft by shoppers.  Merchandise may mysteriously be missing from its place of display.  There are any number of things that may signal a shoplifting problem, the most serious being inventory loss that translates into lost profits.

One of the most effective solutions to prevent shoplifting comes from Checkpoint Security Systems.  The use of antennas from Checkpoint Systems, along with Checkpoint tags and Checkpoint labels will alert store personnel when an item that has not been paid for is leaving the store or department, but will deter all but the most determined shoplifter from attempting to steal from the store as well.

Antennas from Checkpoint Security Systems can detect tags on merchandise of all shapes and sizes.  There are Checkpoint tags designed to protect everything from hardware to underwear.  Checkpoint labels are attached to groceries, boxes, packages, and some types of apparel.   Almost any type or style of high theft merchandise can be protected by a tag or label from Checkpoint Security Systems.

No matter the size of the business, a Checkpoint Security System will be a cost effective solution because profit gained from selling merchandise that would have otherwise been stolen will quickly recover the cost of the system.

Checkpoint Systems “For Dummies”

A Checkpoint security system is an excellent tool used by retailers around the world to help prevent shoplifting. It is a visual deterrent that causes most petty shoplifter to think twice about putting merchandise in their pocket. Also, Checkpoint systems alert employees if someone tries to leave the store with items that have not been purchased.

Checkpoint security systems create an RF (Radio Frequency) field around the antenna(s) that are located at exit points of a retail store. They also may be placed at any point a retailer decides they do not want merchandise that has not been purchased to go. The RF field works the same way as radio or cell phone towers. The closer you are to them the stronger the signal will be. This means that the closer the Checkpoint labels are to the antennas the better the pickup will be.

Checkpoint tags are tuned to a specific frequency that the Checkpoint security system is designed to recognize. This can be compared to a radio station’s number. When you turn the radio in to 97.5 F.M. you are telling your radio to receive the signal that is being transmitted by the radio tower that is broadcasting at 97.5 MHz. A Checkpoint security system does the same thing except it is at 8.2MHz.

This is where some retailer’s expectations become increasingly high. Although Checkpoint security systems do a fantastic job at detecting merchandise with Checkpoint labels, it is not 100 percent accurate by itself. Retailers cannot simply have someone install Checkpoint systems and expect the system to become their entire loss prevention department. This is true with any electronic article surveillance system.

Small Investment, Big Rewards with Bottle Security

What good is a business without profit?  And if all of your merchandise is being stolen or consumed instead of sold…that makes profitability challenging.

Stores that sell wine or liquor are no exception when it comes to experiencing shrink due to theft.  Liquor bottle security was unheard of years ago, but today it does exist, and it can be quite effective in helping you increase your profits and reduce your shrink.

Bottle locks, such as the EASy bottle cap from Alpha Security, fit over the top of your high end/high theft liquors and wines.  This bottle security is only removed with a key by your employees when the item is purchased.  The bottle lock can then be reused on new bottles put out on display.  Thieves and honest customers alike can browse your products, read labels, and handle the merchandise that you have to offer.  But for thieves, the desire to steal your liquor or wines is reduced, due to the challenge of a bottle lock.

Shoplifters who look to steal liquors or wines want to be able to steal it and consume it.  There is not really any other reason to steal liquor and wine.  So if your bottles have bottle security like the EASy bottle cap, the shoplifters have to either purchase the bottle so the bottle lock is removed, or go to someone else’s business that is unprotected.

Liquor bottle security does exist, and for minimal investment it can improve your instock, reduce your theft, and increase your profits.  That’s quite an accomplishment for bottle locks and bottle security in general.  Who would have thought something so simple could have such a profound effect on business?

Convince shoplifters to Pay Instead of Steal with Clothing Security

A common way for customers to steal clothing from businesses is to sack up the clothing and then walk out of the store.  They have the appearance of a customer that has paid, but they in fact either brought in their own sacks for the business or swiped some off of an unattended outlying register.  This type of theft is also more common as customers shift their focus to sustainability and reusable shopping bags become increasingly popular.

There is a very effective way to combat this type of shoplifter, however.  Security tags on clothes are a great deterrent to the shoplifter that tries to sack their unpaid merchandise and walk out of the business.  Clothing security tags are removed with a key by the cashier at the time of purchase, so by bypassing the purchasing, these tags remain on the clothes.  Additionally, when that thief does his or her casual walk out of the store, a clothing alarm will sound when the clothing is too close to the exit.  That happening is a worst nightmare for the shoplifter.

Clothing security is well worth the investment in order to help prevent these types of thefts.  Shoplifters are only successful if they do not have employees’ attention, and clothing security tags will bring that unwanted attention if they are not removed at the registers.  Shoplifters also need to be able to operate smoothly and quickly, not fighting for hours trying to figure out how to remove clothing security tags before stealing an item.

Security tags on clothes help prevent this type of shoplifting, as well as more traditional shoplifting techniques.  Investing in your profits with clothing security will boost your bottom line, decrease your loss due to theft, and send the shoplifters on to the next unprotected business.

Boosting Profits with Alpha Security Products

As the economy hangs between recovery and downfall, protecting your profits with Alpha Security is that much more important. Alpha Security offers the specialty security products you need to create the ideal liquor bottle security program.

Selling liquor can generate positive sales growth in your business, but the biggest threat to positive liquor sales is theft and loss. Alpha Security provides bottle locks to enhance liquor bottle security in your business. Over the years, I’ve seen the trends in various retailers, from grocers to softlines. The margins in liquor can be good, but lacking the proper bottle locks and direction can put your business in danger when liquor bottle security is not enhanced. Bottle Locks provided by Alpha Security offer that protection.

Working in the loss prevention field, I make recommendations to retailers regularly. Liquor bottle security is at the top of my list. Thieves target liquor because of the ease of theft, the street value and the necessity. Having no liquor bottle security offers these thieves even more of an incentive to visit your stores. Keep them out. Take away the opportunity. Look at Alpha Security and find what you need to protect your profits.

Bottle locks are a fairly simple solution to preventing loss in your business. A bottle lock placed on top of each individual liquor bottle prevents the bottle from being opened, and activates the stores security system when the thieve attempts to leave the building. Simply installing bottle locks on your merchandise will greatly reduced instances of loss and theft.

Don’t be the retailer shoplifter’s flock to because of lack of security. Assess your weakness, research solutions and protect your profits. Your business, your customers and your employees will thank you.
