Bottle security out of control at local retailer

Here’s a case of a shoplifter taking advantage of a store with no bottle security.

As the rain poured down outside, the shoplifter looked for a little something extra to take the bite out of the cold. Entering the store, he heads straight for the liquor aisle. Bottle security is nonexistent in this store and he knows it. Heading for the high end, top shelf bottles, he grabs two. Looking in all directions, he stuffs one in his waistband and the other in the inside pocket of his coat. He heads for the front of the store.

Later, two young males enter the store. In the liquor aisle, they point out the brands they like, paying special attention to the lack of bottle security. One of the males pulls out his cellphone. As he has the phone to his ear, he points to the top shelf and counts bottles. He hangs up. He and his partner leave the store. Minutes later, two females enter the liquor aisle pushing a shopping cart with a baby car seat cover by a blanket. Checking for any form of bottle lock, the females start removing the bottles of liquor pointed out by the two males. As each grabs a bottle without a bottle lock, they place them inside of the covered baby car seat. The two females take their fill of liquor, and head straight for the exit. Completing their deed in less than 3 minutes, the ladies take a large haul.

Attaching a simple bottle lock to many of these bottles could have prevented this store from losing thousands of dollars in liquor and provided better bottle security. This happened in a store where the manager/owner knew of the potential theft and was advised of the risk, yet chose to merchandise the items without any bottle lock. This wasn’t the first time these females were seen in the store, a stockroom associate claims to have seen the ladies earlier in the day and on several other times before.

Clothing security benefits the retailer

Over the years, clothing security has proven much less of a challenge than what was previously thought. Clothing security sounds like a daunting, or even scary task. The name alone can invoke a sense of uneasiness, “Clothing Security”. What does that mean?

As I observed the salesfloor from the “catwalk” of one way mirrors at a national clothing store, clothing security was the last thing I was interested in. I wanted to catch shoplifters. In my young mind, I thought “Take what you think you’ll get away with, I’ll catch you.” A point I didn’t really understand until a couple of years later as I grew in loss prevention. Catching shoplifters is a big part of security, but it is impossible to catch every single dirtbag that steals from you.

Later, the realities of clothing security included attaching security tags on clothes. Security tags on clothes; significantly, helps deter the shoplifters I couldn’t catch. I’ve always thought of security tags on clothes as my loss prevention partner. Working clothing stores as a loss prevention agent, I found I could count on security tags on clothes to assist me in preventing theft and loss and watched the areas of merchandise I couldn’t.

A few years ago I read a book written from the shoplifter’s point of view. The writer gave detailed instructions on how to steal, what to do when confronted by security and what to avoid when shoplifting. The writer, an experienced thieve in my opinion, mentioned security tags on clothes and the hassle they provide if your intent as a shoplifter includes getting out of the store unnoticed. He goes on more specifically telling his followers to “case” stores with no clothing security tags. He actually tells these people to wander from store to store looking for clothing stores with no clothing security tags. Are there really stores out there without clothing security tags?

Grocery store to increase anti shoplifting efforts

Anti shoplifting efforts really aren’t meant to be greatly publicized. Most businesses prefer to be low key when utilizing anti shoplift efforts and want to showcase merchandise and customer service instead.

A small, start up grocery chain I once worked was having a real tough time with shoplifters. They were very successful in the local community but were also a big target. Large stores, very busy, little to no obvious or visible security and/or protection… somewhat a thieves paradise.

The management wanted an anti shoplifting program that could go in unannounced, meaning that not even the regular store employees would be aware of the new store security features.

I introduced this store to an anti shoplifting program and showed them a Checkpoint Security system. As the inventory cycle came around, the store saw a decrease in shrink taking the store from near 5% to less than 3% in just one year.

Prevent Shoplifting Through Continuing Education

Finding a sure fire way to prevent shoplifting keeps storeowners and loss prevention agents busy looking for answers. Each store and each location presents its own set of unique challenges when it comes to shoplifting, from location, to clientele, to merchandise mix.

All stores have two things in common, however: customers and employees. The most basic element in reducing opportunity to the shoplifter is customer service. Good customer service, that is paying attention to the customer individually, is one of the best ways to make a shoplifter think twice about stealing, especially if the staff is aware that any customer is a potential shoplifter.

Of course not every customer is a shoplifter, but potentially if given the right circumstances, any customer could be a shoplifter. If everyone is continually reminded, during staff meetings, on the bulletin board, and in notes placed in paychecks that preventing shoplifting is a part of everyone’s responsibility. This doesn’t go just for sales staff, but for support people as well. Every employee should acknowledge each customer and make eye contact as often as possible. How Are You Attaching Your Checkpoint Tags?

How would you like to attach your Checkpoint tags? Pins, lanyards, ink or audible alarms? These are a few of the choices; let’s decide how many of these are right for you. Keep in mind that none of this will effect the detection of your Checkpoint systems.

Pins are the standard attachment devices used with Checkpoint tags. The tag is placed on one side and the pin is pushed through the item and into the tag. Once the pin is inside the tag it will not come loose without using a detacher. This is a very good way to keep checkpoint security tags on items to stop shoplifting. The downside with using pins is that you have to make a tiny puncture in the item that you are tagging. This is why lanyards are being used more and more everyday.

Lanyards allow for you to attach Checkpoint tags to merchandise without have to pierce the item. If you own a clothing store and you have a blouse with a very shear fabric, a lanyard works great. You would just wrap the lanyard around a loop or sleeve of the clothing and attach it to the tag. Lanyards are made out of hardened steel that makes it very difficult cut. You would need industrial wire cutters to have a chance at getting through the metal.

Do you need a more physical response to help stop shoplifting? Ink Checkpoint tags work great to stop shoplifting before it happens. The ink packet works as the pin attaching to a hard tag. If someone tries to remove the tag, the ink packet will break causing permanent ink to spill on him or her and the item. No one wants to steal ruined merchandise.

End Frustration Over Liquor Bottle Security

Liquor stores have enough problems with crime without having to worry about shoplifters and bottle security. But although shoplifting is not in the news like the more noteworthy crimes like robbery, burglary, vandalism, bad checks and credit card fraud, the fact is that economically, shoplifting has an impact that is at least equal to any and all of the other crimes. Make stealing clothes difficult with clothing security

I was recently involved in researching on video a customer that we believed was stealing clothing in order to return it for money. She had multiple returns she had conducted without a receipt, going to several different stores and using more than one identification. She was finally apprehended for shoplifting clothing, but not before returning some of what she had already stolen and receiving cash.
