Retailers Focus is on Selling

While retailers focus on selling their merchandise, which they should, they absolutely cannot ignore retail theft prevention.  Retail theft takes a huge bite out of profits, which negates an enormous amount of sales. So the retailer has to budget time and money away from what’s most productive – merchandising and selling – and devote it to protecting his merchandise and his business.

All retailers know the formula that $1.00 in stolen merchandise equals the profit from $20.00 in sales at a 5% margin.  A shoplifter who gets away with a jacket valued at $100.00 means the retailer has to sell the equivalent 20 more jackets ($2000.00) just to break even.  A lot of sales effort walks out the door with the stolen merchandise.

But suppose instead of letting the merchandise walk out the door there was an anti shoplifting device that would figuratively blow the whistle when a stolen item was leaving the store.

Checkpoint Security Systems makes exactly such a device.  In fact, there are several models of Checkpoint systems that may be used in any retail setting.  Checkpoint tags and Checkpoint labels are available for application on almost any type of merchandise.  The relatively small amount of time and money invested to stop shoplifting as a source of inventory loss is well worth it.

Checkpoint Security Systems is a leader in the manufacture and development of retail theft prevention devices, giving retailers the peace of mind to apply themselves toward the focus of the business – selling.

Retailers can free up time and get a quick return on investment by using Checkpoint Security Systems to guard the door to control or stop shoplifting and grow sales and profits.

A retail theft prevention self-assessment will show the improvement in day-to-day operations of any store.

Liquor security through Alpha Security

Working the world or retail liquor sales has given me the opportunity to work with Alpha Security products. When I first started working loss prevention for retailers selling liquor, I was amazed at just how often these products were ripped off. EVERYDAY, as a loss prevention agent, I made an apprehension involving a customer shoplifting bottles of liquor. For the longest time I knew of no solution other than controlling the liquor stock on the salesfloor and/or locking the liquor up in a cabinet on the salesfloor…yikes. Visiting a friend at another retailer, they used Alpha Security on their liquor bottles to help prevent acts of theft.

Bottle security involves a simple and quick process by store employees receiving liquor and merchandising it out on the sales floor. The bottle lock involved a cap being place over the top of the liquor bottle cap. When I first saw this bottle security product, I thought… wow… this is cool. I mean, finally, here was a product that could potentially help the stores increase the sales of liquor and protect the items at the same time. These things are tough. Alpha security really has something here.

If bottle security is your need, Alpha security, in my opinion, is the way to go. Working in a metro area where customer foot traffic is heavy and the median income is low to medium, I have seen the true effects of having Alpha security and bottle locks on merchandise in my stores. Time after time, I have seen potential shoplifters turned away because of the mere appearance of the bottle locks. I have seen the pro shoplifter have to work hard at gaining the product.
Bottle locks and bottle security should be at the top of the lists for all retailers selling liquor.

Can Your Clothing Alarm Be Used For Something Else?

Your clothing alarm system protects your merchandise 24/7. It does not call in sick or take a vacation. A properly used system will dramatically drop your shoplifting losses. But what else can your clothing alarm be used for?

How about controlling store use items such as tools and equipment. You could place a hard tag on these items that would alert you if they were being removed from the store. We know that people will steal anything that is not nailed down this includes your store property. This could also include pricing guns and any other merchandise labeling equipment.

Do not forget office equipment and supplies that may have a tendency to walk away with either customers or employees.

You can also protect smaller items such as keys. Attach a hard tag to customer restroom keys. That way if the customer simply forgets to return them you will know. Store staff use keys could also be tagged. This is not an issue of theft but just forgetting to put them back before going home. Have you ever come in one morning and the person who closed took keys home by accident?

Documents and paperwork that is not to leave the store can also be protected with a Checkpoint label. Again it is probably not an issue of someone stealing it. You just do not want it to leave the store.

Rental equipment or items should also be protected with a Checkpoint hard tag or Checkpoint label until they have been properly rented and the customer is then authorized to remove them.

Checkpoint security systems the key to anti shoplifting

Checkpoint security systems are used by many retailers.

Let me restart this… Checkpoint security systems are purchased by many retailers, but lots are not using them to their fullest potential. Checkpoint security systems offer a tremendous benefit to ANY retailers looking to protect their merchandise and boost their profits.

Take for example a chain of drug stores I work for. This company has used Checkpoint security systems for many years. Even in the toughest inner-city stores, Checkpoint security systems provide the need support to maintain the day to day operations of the store.

What bigger anti shoplifting effort could a store provide than by installing a Checkpoint security system. Managers and loss prevention professionals alike are always looking for the next big anti shoplifting device or approach, yet the sometimes fail to use their existing equipment or tools appropriately. A Checkpoint security system can be an effective tool towards anti shoplifting, however, the program and store team must be in tune with the ultimate goals of boosting profits and protecting merchandise.

If you are unfamiliar with Checkpoint systems , imagine you as a manager standing at the front of the store. You see a shoplifter with merchandise in his backpack, in his pocket, or concealed in some other way. You immediately notify all other managers and associates by saying “HEY”. Essentially, that’s what Checkpoint Systems do, when used properly. Managers and associates attach checkpoint tags and checkpoint labels to merchandise. This creates an anti shoplifting environment almost immediately. Most thieves want to get in and out of a store without being noticed. Once they see these checkpoint tags and checkpoint labels on the merchandise, they are deterred. For the shoplifters that just don’t care or don’t see the tag, well, they get a wakeup call once they reach the front of the store. A  Checkpoint security system is a great anti shoplifting tool.

Remember Me! Prevent Shoplifting

The retailer who has to prevent shoplifting in his store to remain profitable might well exclaim;

Anti Shoplifting Measures – Atlanta Georgia

The most satisfying part of any anti shoplifting program is the actual apprehension and prosecution of a shoplifter.  Although watching a shoplifter taken away in a police car with his hands shackled behind his back gives some of us a personal sense of accomplishment, in some ways it indicates a failure in our effort to stop shoplifting.

For every shoplifter who is caught, how many get away with stolen merchandise?  I know that plenty do, because only the worst or most unfortunate shoplifters are generally caught.  The others, the good ones, do all they can to reduce the chances of taking the sad ride down to the police station.  They look carefully for CCTV cameras, covert lookouts, sales personnel, store loss prevention and any other hindrances to their endeavors that may be obvious.

Any and all these things designed for retail theft prevention may cause a shoplifter to rethink his intention, or move to a different location in the store, or find another store altogether.  This is the purpose of retail loss prevention, to convince the shoplifter that he would be better served to go to an easier target to resupply his empty shopping bags or abandon the idea altogether.

One of the most efficient ways to get your anti shoplifting message across to the potential shoplifter is with the addition of a Checkpoint Security System.  The antennas, though they are unassuming, stand at the entryway as a warning that the retailer at this location cares enough about his business to actively keep shoplifters out.  Shoplifters tend to go to locations where they don’t have to work quite so hard to steal merchandise.  Whenever merchandise with Checkpoint security tags attached passes the antennas, an alarm is sounded, an event the shoplifter had rather avoid.

Get out of the shoplifter business by taking a look at your anti shoplifting program.

Openly and safely display your wine and spirits with bottle locks

Your customers want to be able to browse through your wine and spirits collection, handling the bottles and reading the labels.  But can you afford to allow this luxury to your customers, when theft and consumption in your store is such a problem?

You can display these items on your sales floor for all to view if you utilize liquor bottle security.  Bottle locks by Alpha Security, such as the EASy bottle caps, can prevent theft by being both a physical and visual deterrent.  When using the bottle locks, the bottle cannot be opened unless a key is used.  All shoplifters want the quick getaway and easy access to the merchandise.  They do not want to steal a bottle of wine or liquor that they have to spend hours figuring out how to open.

Businesses that sell wine and spirits also struggle with individuals consuming product within the business.  These people may need the product, but can’t afford to purchase it.  Some may just choose not to pay for it.  Either way, with bottle security you can proudly display your products and be assured that they are secure and available to be sold, not stolen.

Bottle locks are a visual deterrent, and would-be thieves are deterred by the sight of the locks.  Sales are not lost, because the bottle locks are only on the cap of the bottle.

The presentation of the product is not altered, and sales can be increased because items you once may have displayed behind your counter or in a locked case can now be out where the customers are browsing.

If wine and liquor are items that you sell in your business, consider boosting your profits and decreasing your shrink by investing in liquor bottle security. Alpha Security has what you need!

The profitability of clothing security

Is it really profitable to add clothing security on to the checklist of items it takes to run a clothing business?

Many managers and business professionals have a tendency to look at clothing security as a profit killer. They factor in the time it takes to install the security tags on clothes and other minimal facts. Ultimately it kills their plans to provide clothing security. Yet, they tend to forget if there is no merchandise to sell there are no profits.

Let me make this as simple and as straight forward as possible. Clothing security is a vital part of running any clothing business. Whether you feel you have the best situation, store location, nice area of town or believe that you have customers that don’t steal… get your store clothing security tags.

Putting in place a clothing security program is simple, but will require you to do some homework. Security tags on clothes can come in a number of different designs and styles, better suiting your needs. Clothing security tags are an obvious image to amateur and professional shoplifters alike. These guys like to go for the merchandise that is least protected. Look around your store. What merchandise do you consider desirable? All of it, right? What are you doing to protect it?

Clothing security tags are affordable and will provide payback through the protection of the merchandise. Many times I have seen retailers try and cut corners, ultimately costing them more in the long run. Protect your merchandise now with security tags on clothes and save yourself the headache in the future.
Get it done. Don’t be the clothing retailer shoplifters frequent because you are unprotected. Clothing security tags are an essential business practice and will boost your profits and protect your business for years to come.

One Step to Prevent Shoplifting

To prevent shoplifting, remember the old adage, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”  What this saying means is that it is easier to prevent a condition from occurring that it is once it has become established.

When applied to shoplifting, a major concern for almost any retailer, this statement makes a lot of sense.

The main idea of prevention is to keep shoplifting from occurring in the first place.  To do this, the retailer should increase the risk to the shoplifter.  The other side of the equation would be to increase the shoplifter’s punishment, but that assumes the shoplifter will be caught and even then the punishment is up to a judge or jury.

So, other than posting a sign at the entrance that reads “Shoplifters Will Be Shot”, what can a retailer do to deter and prevent shoplifting at his store?

One excellent deterrent to shoplifting is the presence of a retail anti theft device at the entrance to the store.  One such device is the Checkpoint Security System.  While the system, which consists of one or more antennas depending on the size of the entrance, is certainly not “in your face” obvious, it is recognized by most shoplifters as an effective anti shoplifting solution that is difficult to defeat.

The Checkpoint Security System never gets distracted or takes a break.  It doesn’t care what a shoplifter looks like, how he is dressed, or how many bags he carries.  Blind spots in the store that are used by shoplifters to conceal merchandise are unimportant to it.

In short, all the Checkpoint Security System cares about is if the merchandise passing through it has been paid for or not.  If not, an alarm sounds to alert the staff.

Keep honest customers honest and prevent shoplifting by committing to reduce shrink and save money with Checkpoint.

Employee Theft: Big Business – Atlanta Georgia

When I first started in this industry I always looked at employee theft as the manifestation of greed or desperation, however recently I have noticed that it is becoming big business.

We all know that there is no honor among thieves, but apparently there is no honor among retailers either. One of my stores is located in a strip mall. 2 stores down is a large beauty supply store. One of the cashiers at my store was apprehended for employee theft trying to sneak a backpack full of high-end shampoos, perfumes, etc. out of the store without paying. During the interview she began singing like a canary. (I sincerely love these kinds of people, by the way) It appears the owner of the beauty supply store was happily paying anyone who stole from us. This allowed him to pay the thief and still sell the merchandise at a lower price than we were because it was all profit to him. Needless to say we went after that store owner like a pit bull on a chew toy.

In another instance I was at a local watering hole that I don’t often frequent when a young man that I recognized from one of the grocery stores I work at walked in. He saw me, nodded nervously and walked out quickly. The bartender proceeded to tell me that he and a couple of his buddies come in about 2 or 3 times a week selling large quantities of meat and seafood at discount prices. Of course I looked into it and of course they were guilty. The 3 men, 2 of which worked in the meat department were sneaking the product out of the store at night and selling it on the street to whoever was willing to pay their low prices because again, it was all profit to them. Be aware, employee theft has graduated from the minors and is becoming a major league business.
