Anti Shoplifting Solution Decisions

There is no one in a better position to make decisions about anti shoplifting solutions than the business owner himself.  Of course the decision should not be made without a thorough analysis of the factors that contribute to the inventory shrinkage problem and gaining all the input he can possibly get.  This is one decision that should not be made by intuition alone.

The problem may be obvious.  The owner or manager may receive reports from employees or customers that have witnessed customer theft.  Merchandise may mysteriously disappear from display.  There are any number of signs that may indicate a big shoplifting problem, the most serious of which is inventory loss that translates into lost profits.

One of the most effective anti shoplifting solutions comes from Checkpoint Security Systems.  The proper use of pedestals from Checkpoint Systems, along with Checkpoint tags and Checkpoint labels will not only alert store personnel when an item that has not been paid for is leaving the store or department, but will deter all but the most determined shoplifter from even attempting to steal from the store.

Pedestals from Checkpoint Security Systems can detect merchandise of all kinds, large or small.  There are Checkpoint tags designed to protect everything from eyewear to shoes to golf clubs.  Checkpoint labels are used to safeguard groceries, boxes, packages, and certain types of apparel.   Almost any type or style of high theft merchandise can be protected by a tag or label from Checkpoint Security Systems.

No matter the size of the business, a Checkpoint Security System will be cost effective because the profit gained from selling the merchandise that would have otherwise been shoplifted will quickly cover the cost of the system.

Upgrade Your Checkpoint

Do you already own a Checkpoint security system ? Have you had your system for so long that you don’t even notice it until it alarms? Well, it might be time for an upgrade. Whether this is something you have already been thinking about or you feel that your system hasn’t seen its last days, there are a few things that you might want to consider.

Your Checkpoint security system has served you well but there have been several additions since your system was installed. Over the last few years Checkpoint systems have made great strides in improving the efficiency and abilities of the antennas. Here are a few of the new additions.

Checkpoint systems now have the ability to have their firmware upgraded to help improve detection and limit interference. This allows your system to grow with the ever-changing technology and not become outdated. Tuning and programming of the system uses state-of-the-art software for precise adjustments instead of cumbersome manually turned dials. No longer do you have to worry about someone walking around the outside of the antennas because the new Liberty Checkpoint systems detect on both sides of the antenna. Thanks to advances in technology the “pick rate” has improved to over 98%.

There are countless reasons to upgrade your Checkpoint security system but only one reason not to… cost. Good news, the new Liberty antennas are probably backwards compatible with the current layout of your store. Already have deactivation? Works just as well with the new antennas as it does with your current ones. Not sure if you want to deal with the hassle of having your system re-wired? A new system, in almost all cases, uses the same wires that are already in place.

Protect your business from shoplifters: Use clothing security

There are a lot of red flags that you may be noticing in your business that indicate that you are a victim of theft.  Are you finding hangers, tags, or empty packages out on your sales floor?  Is there merchandise that is unaccounted for?  Is your inventory telling you that there is supposed to be merchandise on your shelves that cannot be found?  All of these can suggest that you are losing merchandise to shoplifters and thieves.

If you own or manage a business that sells clothing, there are options in clothing security to help protect this highly sought after merchandise.  In the retail environment I work in, we see clothing shoplifted on an almost daily basis.  It is easy to conceal, therefore easier to steal.  Clothing security tags are one way to help stop this downward spiral of profit loss.

Arming your store with a visible alarm system at your entrance and exit, while having clothing security tags, can keep your clothing in your store for your customers to purchase.  Shoplifters are observant and scope out businesses they wish to target.  By having visual deterrents such as clothing security, you can have a profound impact on your profitability by retaining the merchandise you wish to sell.

Professional shoplifters, also called boosters, are out there and target businesses that sell clothing.  They can steal thousands worth of clothes in a very short amount of time, and leave you wondering why your clothing racks are empty.  Throw them off with clothing security tags and let them know you take the protection of your merchandise seriously.

Clothing without clothing security tags might as well say “Steal me” on the tag, next to the price that the shoplifter will not look at.  But by having security tags on clothes that you sell, you can send a different message to the shoplifter: “Plan to pay, or go away.”

Time to Stop Shoplifting at Your Store

How can a storeowner or manager reduce or even stop shoplifting at his business?  Sometimes it seems like a losing battle at inventory time and there is a large unexplained inventory shortage.  The customers seem to be saying, “If it’s not nailed down, it’s mine.  If it is nailed down, I’ll pry it loose.”

The it’s time to take a look around and see what measures can be taken to stop shoplifting once and for all (or at least slow it down.)  As much as many storeowners would like to lock all shoplifters in prison and throw away the key, prevention is the more cost effective remedy.  Make them go somewhere else, like to your competitor, and let him deal with them.

When your potential shoplifter comes into the store, does staff that look him in the eye and say hello greet him?  Do they frequently ask him if he needs any help?  Does he see retail anti theft devices such as a Checkpoint Security System designed to stop shoplifting at the entrance?  Is vulnerable and desirable merchandise protected with Checkpoint security tags that will activate an audible alarm as it leaves the building without being paid for?

Are salespeople strategically located to be able to observe all areas of the sales floor at all times?  Is there adequate staff assigned and in place at vulnerable times like opening and closing?

Shoplifters don’t want to be noticed and they don’t want to be caught.  Reduce your risk by training staff, reducing target opportunity, and inviting shoplifters out of your store through visible prevention measures.

The battle to reduce or stop shoplifting can be won, but it takes a sustained and broad effort.

The Over-eager Loss Prevention Investigator – Atlanta Georgia

I have to say that the thing I’ve always liked most about being a loss prevention investigator is the fact that no 2 days are alike. One day you may have to corral a paranoid schizophrenic kleptomaniac housewife and the very next day you may find yourself in the midst of a gang-banger initiation. (Both of these have happened to me, by the way) It’s definitely an exciting life, but as I’m sure you can imagine it can be a potentially dangerous one if you don’t take the proper precautions, keep your head on a swivel and stay ready for any and everything.

As a loss prevention investigator I’ve done a lot of work in the state of Wisconsin. (The frozen tundra for you football fans) To say it gets cold there is more than just an understatement. However, I keep it pretty toasty in my office, so a couple of weeks ago while working – wearing nothing but a pair of khakis and a t-shirt- I spot a “gentleman” loading up a cart full of high end tennis shoes. Sure enough he fills it to the brim and starts heading for the door. Being the Action Jackson wanna-be that I am I jumped up and went to apprehend him – without a jacket. He did NOT come quietly.

After knocking down one of my colleagues and taking a little jog through a waist-high snow bank the local police had to pull their weapons on him before he finally stopped. Well, now I’m sweating, I’m wet and I’m outside in 4 degree weather dressed in nothing but a t-shirt. Luckily the responding officer let me take a breather in the warm squad car. Of course this was probably just because he couldn’t understand my statement over the sound of my teeth chattering. Point of the story: determination and chutzpa are great, but without preparation and readiness a loss prevention investigator can find his/ herself up a creek without a paddle… or in the snow without a coat… or something.

Prevent Shoplifting – Save More $$ in Atlanta Georgia

Prevent Shoplifting – Save More $$ Than You Really Know – Atlanta Georgia

When shoplifting and ways to prevent shoplifting are discussed, the two victims who are generally mentioned are the storeowner and the customers, who ends up paying more for the items they purchase in the store.  These are obvious, but in reality there are more victims.

The storeowner, or the company that owns the store is certainly worth mention because he is the one who actually paid real money for the merchandise that was stolen.  Not only does he lose the profit that he would have gained had he sold the item, he is also out the money that he paid for it which is a greater amount than the profit.

In order to recover the cost of the stolen item, and hopefully the profit, the storeowner has to raise the prices on his remaining goods so that when they are sold, he can recover his loss.

The storeowner decides to take measures to prevent shoplifting, he may employ security and loss prevention, he may purchase CCTV cameras, or use electronic article surveillance (EAS) such as those solutions provided by Checkpoint Systems.  He may buy special display hardware that prevents the merchandise from being removed from the premises.   All these measures cost the retailer money, which he must recover through increased pricing or reduction in some other expenses.

One of the places any employer may go to cut expenses is to the payroll budget or the employee benefits package.  So yet another group that might be harmed is the employees at the store that is losing merchandise to shoplifters.  Jobs may be lost and benefits may be cut.  This is frequently the case when businesses are not profitable for whatever reason.

If all efforts to prevent shoplifting fail but the shoplifter is caught, that should put an end to the losses, right?

What happens when a shoplifter is caught?  A police officer (paid by tax money), transports the shoplifter in a police car (tax money) to a jail (tax money) to await trial in a court (tax money) presided over by a judge (tax money), etc.  You see where this leads.  Everyone who pays taxes also pays to support shoplifter prevention through financing the criminal justice system.

Not to have pity on the shoplifter, but he gets a criminal record, a fine, maybe jail time, restitution, and being labeled a thief by everyone who knows.

The storeowner has every right to prevent shoplifting.  It saves us all in the end.

The Signs of Employee Theft – Atlanta Georgia

As long as you have employees you’re going to have employee theft. Bleak, I know, but I never promised you a rose garden. This is simply one of the universal truths of doing business. Another unfortunate truth is that by the time you actually catch an employee stealing and are able to build a case against him/ her they’ve probably been doing it for a while and you’ve probably already lost quite a bit of money as a result. So you need to be able to read the signs that can inform you who is most likely to steal from you before they actually do it.

First of all, anyone who displays the signs of a possible substance abuse problem (whether it is illegal drugs, prescription drugs or alcohol) should be watched closely. These issues tend to quickly exhaust an individual’s personal finances. As a result they then go looking elsewhere for cash to support their habit and your cash register is a great place to start. An extravagant lifestyle is a warning sign as well. If you have a cashier who makes $11/hr but drives to work in a Porsche everyday you may want to look into that.

Some employee theft takes place out of revenge. Maybe an individual got passed over for a promotion or feels somehow slighted by a member of management; this can often lead to an attitude where they feel they deserve better and will take it if it isn’t given. Be aware of constant complaining or a belligerent attitude by an employee. Sometimes a person will even admit to having stolen money or merchandise from a previous employer. That’s a definite red flag for you to look for. There are many different reasons for employee theft. Our goal is to stop it before it starts.

A Checkpoint Security System From the Technician’s Point Of View

Ok, let’s say that you have made the wise decision to purchase a Checkpoint Security System for your store. I would like to explain to you some of the functionality of your system. The Checkpoint systems create a RF (radio frequency) field around your front door to detect the security tags that you have placed on the merchandise. The tags are tuned to 8.2 MHz, which although it is a unique frequency, does not mean that there are not other items near your storefront that could also give off 8.2 MHz.

When your system was (or soon will be) installed the technician will take time to look for and correct any “interference” that might be present at the time.

As time goes on, some Checkpoint systems could experience false alarms. There are many reasons that this could occur but it is unlikely that it is something wrong with the system itself. If your system is alarming, it is detecting 8.2 MHz. The most common causes for false alarms are due to changes in the environment, whether tagged merchandise is placed too close to the antenna or a door that is settling. This is why it is important to have a preventative maintenance plan for your system. As the merchandise and storefront front changes, so will your Checkpoint systems.

It is very important to keep your Checkpoint security system functioning properly because if a problem occurs where false alarms start happening employees will all too often start to ignore any alarms. Checkpoint systems are most effective when they are incorporated with knowledgeable employees and a quick response.

Shoplifters want simplicity and a quick getaway – with your merchandise.  When a shoplifter is deciding whether or not to steal from your store, he or she wants to be able to grab and conceal the merchandise without anything standing in their way.  So invest in security tags on clothes, so there can be something very effective standing in their way.

Can a Mystery Shopper Stop Shoplifting?

How Can a Mystery Shopper Stop Shoplifting?

I don’t mean that the mystery shopper is actually doing the shoplifting, but what the shopper includes in her evaluation can point to weaknesses in a store’s anti shoplifting efforts.

A mystery shopper should be looking for conditions defined by the store management and a consultant from the company that provides the mystery shopper.  For instance, a shopper may be instructed to take note of the way she is greeted by store staff.  Is proper attention paid to the shopper or does she enter the store unnoticed and ignored?  As she browses in areas of the store that are hidden from cashier’s view, is she approached and offered assistance?  Are policies being followed concerning incoming packages, that is, are they checked and sealed?

Do the employees make eye contact with the shopper, an efficient way to recognize the shopper and stop shoplifting by customers who feel they have been recognized?

The shopper can be scheduled to visit the store at times that are considered vulnerable to theft, such as opening or closing.  Busy times or slow times may be best for a shopper’s visit, and the visits may be varied so that different scenarios are evaluated.

To stop shoplifting is often not the first priority when a mystery shopping service is used, but in some cases it should be.
