Checkpoint Security Systems Used To Prevent Shoplifting

Retailers are using Checkpoint Security Systems to prevent shoplifting and control inventory shrinkage. Loss Prevention Systems has seen retail shrinkage rates drop as much as 50% in many retailers that put this anti shoplifting program in place.

All Checkpoint security tags are paper-thin and come is dozens of styles. A Retailer can custom print barcode and pricing information directly on them on them, in most cases using the POS printer you have in your store. LPSI can also custom print them for you. This reduces labor and provides an additional tag disguise from shoplifters.

All Checkpoint Security Systems are professionally installed and consist of a set of antennas at the customer doors. The antennas have a contemporary modern design and complement any décor. You can even place advertising panels on them that communicate your latest sales, promotions or just your logo. Checkpoint Security Systems even provide automatic customer counting.

Checkpoint Security System Training

A strong deterrent to shoplifters can be achieved by installing a checkpoint security system. This includes the impulse, amateur and professional shoplifters. But employee involvement is critical. Many retailers believe that they have solved all their shoplifting problems once they have installed a Checkpoint Security System; however, that is one step in the process of solving shoplifting losses.

Employees typically understand how to operate Checkpoint security systems, but  a common problem is that employees are not trained on what to do when there is an alarm, or held accountable for alarms when they occur.

In many cases the Checkpoint system will alarm and an employee will just wave the customer (or shoplifter) through. Even worse they will say the system is not working properly. Because of a lack of training or confidence the employee just told everyone in range that they can shoplift to their hearts content…. and will just be waved on.

Checkpoint security systems installed by Loss Prevention Systems include on site training. We also provide our customers with training documents that allow you to keep the training on going.

How often should you train and provide follow up training to your employees on the use of your system? You decide. It depends on how much money you are willing to loose to shoplifters.

New Checkpoint Labels

Now is the time to take a look at the new Checkpoint tags and checkpoint labels . One of the most exciting is the EP-3210 Clear Poly (Enhanced Performance). This tag is “see-thru”. Checkpoint has really outdone itself this time!
Checkpoint labels can be placed directly over the barcode on a product. The barcode can then be read directly through the tag. But there is more. The EP-3210 Clear Poly pretty much disappears once in place. Yes the circuit of the tag is visible but in the tests we have run the tag blends into many products packaging.
Checkpoint truly is the innovator in the Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) market. The new line of EP tags include two sizes of round tags which are great for small boxes or bottles and have no corners that may have to wrap around the edges. Other sizes include the postage stamp size and the EP-410, which is the same size as the traditional 410 tag.
But why use the new EP tags? This series gives the BEST performance of any 8.2 tags in the market, period end of sentence!
Consider this,  checkpoint labels out perform any other manufacture. The adhesive is aggressive and wont give out and cause the tag to fall off the merchandise. When you deactivate a Checkpoint security tag… it is deactivated. It will not re-activate on it’s own. Reactivated tags are common with non-Checkpoint and cause embarrassing alarms when your customer attempts to exit your store after a legitimate purchase.
Loss Prevention Systems sells all Checkpoint tags including the EP-3210 Clear Poly.

Checkpoint Security System Introduction

A  checkpoint security system will help you reduce your shoplifting losses and increase your profits by keeping more inventory on hand and available for sale.  A Checkpoint security system involves installing devices inside the exit way, “antennas” that will detect inventory that has been “tagged” with checkpoint security system tags which are either Checkpoint hard tags or Checkpoint labels.

This method of anti shoplifting technology is also a great deterrent.  Studies show that installing Electronic Article Surveillance antennas (EAS) at doorways visually says that “this place is protected and secured”, which will scare of a large majority of shoplifters.  These shoplifters then pass the protected store by and move on to another unprotected retail target.

Clothing Security Tags Tactics

If you are using normal clothing security tags and still experiencing loss you need to evaluate the problem and take further action Follow the steps below:

1 Is the loss on all types of merchandise you sell or just specific types of items. In other words certain lines such as Polo or leather jackets are being targeted. You have to know this first. Keep a log. Have your employees note where and when they find evidence of this.

2 You need to consider how and where you apply your clothing security tags . Are they on a seam or other location that is robust enough to make tag removal difficult? Are your employees applying tags to every one of the items that you have decided must be tagged? Many times tagging does not happen and the product gets put out anyway.

3 If it is specific line of items that have problems you may need to add a new tag to your arsenal of tags. There are tags that take your security to another level. This tag is not used in place of your standard hard tags but in addition to it. This new tag will still cause an alarm on your Checkpoint system. However, the tag itself can have its own built in sounder that is VERY loud. The sounder will go off if the tag goes through the Checkpoint antennas. There is little doubt at that point where the tag is.

But, better yet while in the store if the shoplifter attempts to damage or remove the tag the built in tag sounder goes off.

4 When the Checkpoint Anti-shoplifting system alarms, are your employees simply waving the customer on? Every time you do this you train your customers, shoplifters and anyone else that observes this that you can shoplift to your hearts content.

If you take clothing security tags seriously then you will reduce shoplifting.

New Clothing Security Tags

Checkpoint is releasing new  clothing security tags . They are called the “3G Hard Tag With Super Lock”. These tags are bi-color white and gray. The 3G is similar in size to the mini-hard tag.

The 3G will solve several problems in the mini-hard tag area. Cheap imports knockoffs have been made to look identical to the Checkpoint tag, less the Checkpoint logo. These knockoffs generally have rough edges that snag clothing.  They also have very poor locking clutches that do not function smoothly.

3G clothing security tags will require a super detacher, which means that shoplifters will not be able to remove them. Placement of the 3G will be the same as any other hard tag. Place them on a seam, top rear of a shirt below the collar, eyelet of a shoe, etc.  Use the same pins you already have. The 3G also has a hole that will accept a flex string. Use this to loop the flex string through larger items.

Another clothing security tag tip is to drop a label such as a 410 in a pocket in addition to the hard tag. Double your security for a few more pennies.

RETAIL THEFT…..HOW TO PROTECT YOUR MERCHANDISE

Retail theft is one of the main concerns of store owners today.  It can be extremely expensive to protect your store from shoplifting .  There are many inexpensive “tricks of the trade” that can help keep theft at your store at a minimum.

The true definition of an anti shoplifting system is “any device or method used to prevent or deter the unauthorized appropriation of items considered valuable.”  Good grief!  What a big jumble of words!  Basically it’s how to keep people from stealing stuff in your store.  Let’s look at a few methods to keep retail theft to a minimum.  Some of these may be things you have never considered.

· Be a neat freak!!  A cluttered or messy store allows places for thieves to hide.  If they feel exposed and out in the open then they are less likely to start shoplifting from you.
· Scare them with lights!!  Much like vampires, lights scare potential thieves.  A great way to prevent retail theft is to have a very well lit store.  Especially pay attention to bright lighting where there are areas that a cashier or store employee cannot easily see from a register.
· Security cameras…even if they just look like a security camera…is a great deterrent.
· Wooden hangers!  These help keep clothes separated on racks and deter theft better than metal hangers.

Retail theft is one of the oldest crimes around.  All types of anti shoplifting devices have been around since people started stealing other people’s possessions.  Most retail theft prevention centers around reducing the opportunity to steal something versus dealing with the thief themselves.

There are many reasons we need to protect our merchandise.  Maybe it’s expensive, perhaps it’s easy to steal, or the item is just very desirable to others (jewelry, electronics, etc.).

INVESTIGATION THROUGH PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING

Should employers actually check up on potential hires through pre-employment screening?  ABSOLUTELY!  A recent study showed that half of all reference checks conducted on prospective employees differed between what the job applicant provided and what the reference source reported.  Would a potential candidate actually lie on their resume or job application? In today’s job market, you better believe it!

Pre-employment screening through background checks, criminal or credit checks is a highly controversial topic.  Many people in the general public do not wish for their personal history to be poked through by some investigator.  Some people feel that the information that could be discovered is either irrelevant, or could be taken the wrong way, if the potential employer does not have all the facts.

One way to prevent harm to a potential employee is to provide them with the report prior to giving it to the employer.  This way, the individual can address any discrepancies on the front end.

In May, 2002, Northwest Airlines was hit with a civil lawsuit by 10,000 of its mechanics.  Basically Northwest was accused of using information that was past the 10 year limit set by some current laws.  According to the Fair Credit Reporting Act, arrest records can remain for up to seven years.  Some credit information can remain for up to 10 years.

Employees working in the trucking industry, airports, ports of entry, cruise ships, etc will be subject to a pre-employment screening more often than other types of job categories.  Any employee who makes greater than $75,000 dollars per year may be subject to pre-employment screening and background checks that goes back for longer periods of time and contains more thorough information.

Juvenile Shoplifters & Security Tags On Clothes

Statistics show that placing security tags on clothes like a Checkpoint System is the most effective security device in deterring juvenile shoplifters. These security tags are hard to remove by anyone without a detacher unit. Kids do not have access to these detachers. Forcibly removing the tag will damage the clothing item.

Add an ink tag to this and if they attempt to remove a security tags on clothes that has an ink tag with it and they will be rewarded with a mess that becomes permanent. The pressurized dye in an ink tag will rapidly spread ink on the stolen item and will generally get on the kids hands. The dye is multi colored. Don’t worry, you have to use quite a bit of force to rupture the pressurized glass vials that are filled with ink. Normal and even rough handling by a customer or employee will not cause an issue.

Checkpoint even has a small plastic tag that can be applied to the ink tag. It displays a warning. Clothing security tags, ink tags and the warning tag are all reusable over and over.

Kids generally want to steal an item quickly and then use it right away. If they see security tags on clothes they will generally move on to another store that is unprotected. Clothing security is simple and cost effective.
