Reducing Opportunities for Inventory Loss – Loss Prevention Workshop

The need for loss prevention in your store or business has one main goal – to prevent opportunities. If you are not completely adept in how to do this, you might want to explore a loss prevention workshop that can help you expand your loss prevention training.

In a nutshell, loss prevention is about reducing the opportunity for merchandise or cash losses in your business. It is about developing standard business practices and procedures that limit the scope by which you might suffer monetary or inventory loss. These losses create a financial burden that is hard to recover from.

Loss prevention seminars will give you some ideas for processes that you can develop and implement. There really is no need to try and re-invent the wheel. There are many practices that have already been developed that have been proven to eliminate or deter both employee theft and shoplifting.

You probably have policies and procedures in place for other functional areas of your store like sales, customer service, or human resources. So why would you not have these same policies for loss prevention in place. It is just as easy to give your employees loss prevention training as it is to train them on how to run a register or sell to a customer.

What Did You Learn Today? – Loss Prevention Training

Every day I try and ask myself what I learned. Sometimes it is some completely mind blowing piece of information that will forever change my outlook on life. Sometimes it is just a bit of pop trivia in the news. Other times, it is a new skill or recipe that I learned (I am trying to be a better cook). Even after years in the Loss Prevention trade, sometimes what I learn is a new shoplifting or employee theft technique.

You can never be too old to learn something new. Even if all you learn is that you are slowly becoming more out dated and obsolete as time goes by. That is why professionally I try to stay on top of new shoplifting tools and techniques by attending loss prevention seminars.

Even employee theft changes as time goes by. Yes, the basic principles are still there, but attending loss prevention training never hurts. The loss prevention workshop will show you what is currently trending with the criminal element. It can also show you how to update your security, and your policies to reduce or potentially eliminate the losses your store might be incurring. Believe me, it is something that is much easier to do if you have the right loss prevention training vs. doing it all on your own.

How Did You Get Here? – Loss Prevention Workshop

At a recent Loss Prevention Workshop, several Loss Prevention professionals talked about their recent promotions and how they got to those positions. While I would have thought that they would have credited their success to things like employee theft resolution or uncovering a significant shoplifting ring, they had other reasons for their success.

One of the best pieces of advice they gave, is something I have stressed in my own personal career for many years. At this loss prevention training class, they spoke about the importance of learning other areas of the company or business outside of just loss prevention. It was a critical factor in their success stories.

It is so important, because it shows your respect for those other areas. It is nearly impossible to try and guide or confer with another department if you don’t have any knowledge of their responsibilities and processes.

It is also important to broaden your horizons. The more you know about the full circle of your business, the stronger you are as a manager or a key player, just as these professionals did.

The same thing goes for those out there that are going to loss prevention seminars to broaden their own horizons. The more you know about different areas of a business, the better off you will be.

What will you lose? – Loss Prevention Workshop

When you have employee theft happening in your store, do you know what you will lose? There is more to those cases than just a simple financial loss.

If an employee is taking cash, you obviously will have a very specific dollar loss that you will be looking at. What about the other losses? How about your time? How much time will you loose researching those losses? Do you know how to track your cash shortages and not only figure out which employee (or employees) is stealing from you? Will that employee theft case hold up in court or will it be dismissed leaving you open to further litigation?

What about your lost productivity during the inventory replenishment process? If you have a merchandise theft case, you are increasing the amount of time you are spending replenishing your inventory through additional orders and time spent physically restocking the shelves. Can you track those losses? Can you determine where our merchandise is being lost from and how to solve it?

Taking part in a loss prevention workshop will help you with those questions. You will benefit from other’s experience in tracking and building theft cases. The loss prevention workshop will help give you a step-by-step process to guide you through the investigation and give you pointers on things you might have overlooked otherwise.

It’s All In The Approach- Loss Prevention Seminars

Let’s face it; your employees are probably going to be more aware of employee theft before you are. If you are not approachable, your current employees may not feel comfortable coming to you with information about a theft situation.
You don’t have to be jaded from past experiences to not be viewed as approachable. Sometimes, employees who are privy to employee theft happening in the store simply do not know what to do with the information. By providing a new outlet for communication, you have a better chance of eliminating or responding quickly to these instances of theft.
It might be time to participate in some loss prevention training. They will help you come to terms with your past theft issues. They will also be able to help broach the subject with your current employees. Loss prevention seminars are designed to open up the lines of communication.
Loss prevention seminars give you ideas of how to start talking to your employees about employee theft. Just because you have seen employees steal during your career, doesn’t mean your other employees have to. Many are in disbelief that theft actually happens, much less believing that it can happen in their store by people they know.
Once these employees know that can happen even in their store, they will now know what to do with that information.

Keep Your Resolution- Loss Prevention Seminars

One of the reasons why New Year’s resolutions commonly fail within the first three weeks is because these goals are so vague that it is nearly impossible to quantify or track any potential progress that has been made. This makes them simply unattainable because there is no way to track your progress. When you make a goal to attend Loss Prevention Seminars, you are setting a quantifiable goal.
By determining the who, what, when, where and why, you are no providing specific data that can be validated – a way to measure you and your goal’s success. Which class will you take? When and where is it being held? Who in your business will attend? What should you expect to see as a result?
Now you have a specific date with specific attendees in mind. You are now able to achieve your goal because you kept it simple, measurable and therefore attainable. You can also measure your success by measuring the impact that the Loss Prevention Workshop has on your business and your store.
You can compare year-to-year shrink results to see if there is a decrease. You can also take the knowledge that was gained from the Loss Prevention Training and implement a set number of those ideas. If you incorporate those ideas and tactics, your overall losses should diminish.

Who Wants To Know? – Loss Prevention Seminars

When you attend good a loss prevention seminar, it is hard to know who will walk away with more – you or your employees.

Attending a loss prevention workshop is a good business decision that every manager or owner should make at some point in his or her career. It will provide invaluable knowledge about ways you can reduce your losses. They will also give you a heads up on ways that both shoplifting and employee theft can occur.

I would encourage you to take your complete staff with you so they can benefit from the same loss prevention training that you are getting. It will help their awareness of common losses that can occur in a retail setting.

After the training is completed, you will have an open line of communication with your employees. By discussing some of the things you learned with your employees, they may come to you more openly with concerns they have, or things that they have seen. These might be things like employee theft or shoplifting that they were uncomfortable talking to you about before.

These open lines of communication provide you with additional eyes and ears on the pulse of your business. Some of the best information I have received about losses has come directly from my employees.

Right Where You Want Them – Loss Prevention Training

I was never a good chess player. I have plenty of family and friends that play chess, and a few of them are quite good. I always marvel at their ability to maneuver their opponent into making a losing move. It reminds me of when I conduct an employee theft interview and investigation.

It’s really all about understanding the nuances of the game you are playing. For chess, it is in knowing the parameters of the board – which piece moves where and how. It’s also about having a clear understanding of the end result – the win.

With employee theft, you are concerned with knowing what the employee did and how they got away with it for so long. The interview is about asking questions in a certain succession so their answers unfold into a confession. That admission should tell you not only the scope of your losses, but also your operational breakdowns that allowed those losses to occur.

Since I am not a natural born chess player, I needed all the help I could get to be better at my employee theft interviews. I signed up for several Loss Prevention Seminars. The Loss Prevention Training I got helped me learn how to move the employee’s admissions right where I wanted them to be.
