As a business owner or manager you have probably seen your share of employee theft over the years. It is a difficult problem in many ways. Not only do you suffer the financial losses caused by employee theft, but you can also suffer the emotional loss caused by this employee’s betrayal.

Over time, you might be more desensitized by these emotional losses and can begin to develop a general distrust for most employees. This makes it hard to be a good leader and a good listener. Policy, In a Nutshell – Loss Prevention Training

In a nutshell, loss prevention is about reducing the opportunity for merchandise or cash losses in your business. It is about developing standard business practices and procedures that limit the scope by which you might suffer monetary or inventory loss. These losses create a financial burden that is hard to recover from. This is where you need Loss Prevention Training and development.

You probably have policies and procedures in place for other functional areas of your store – things like sales, customer service, or human resources. So why would you not have these same policies for loss prevention in place.

It is just as easy to give your employees a loss prevention workshop, as it is to train them on how to run a register or sell to a customer.

Try Something New – Loss Prevention Workshop

You can never be too old to learn something new. Even if all you learn is that you are slowly becoming more out dated and obsolete as time goes by. That is why, professionally, I try to stay on top of the current shoplifting methods by attending a loss prevention workshop.

Even employee theft changes as time goes by. Yes, the basic principles are still there, but attending a loss prevention training refresher course never hurts. The loss prevention seminars will show you what is currently trending with the criminal element. There are high tech ways that people are incurring losses. There are also the same methods being used, just with new twists to try and stay up with the current technologies being used.

Updated training can also show you how to update your security, and your policies to reduce or potentially eliminate the losses your store might be incurring. Remember shoplifting isn’t just about defeating a security tag anymore.

Recently Promoted – Loss Prevention Training

One of the best pieces of advice they’ve given at a recent loss prevention training class, is something I have stressed in my own personal career for many years. In this loss prevention workshop, some recently promoted corporate loss prevention professionals spoke of the importance of learning other areas of the company or business outside of just loss prevention. It was a critical factor in their success stories.

They were talking about why it is so important to cross train yourself in different areas of a company or business. It shows your respect for those other areas. It is nearly impossible to try and guide or confer with another department if you don’t have any knowledge of their responsibilities and processes.

It is also important to broaden your horizons because your own working knowledge will make you more successful. The more you know about the full circle of your business, the stronger you are as a manager or a key player, just as these professionals did. The same thing goes for those out there that are going to loss prevention training to broaden their own horizons. The more you know about different areas of a business, the better off you will be.

How can you possibly know what to look for in regards to employee theft, for example, if all you know is selling? How can you be profitable if you don’t know operations? It all comes together with a full circle knowledge that comes from loss prevention seminars.

Unproductive Time – Loss Prevention Training

When you have theft happening in your store, do you know what you will lose? There is more to those cases than just a simple financial loss. What about your lost productivity during the inventory replenishment process? If you have no loss prevention training, you will loose significantly more in time and productivity that what the employee theft can do in straight dollars lost.

If you have a merchandise theft case, you are increasing the amount of time you are spending replenishing your inventory through additional orders and time spent physically restocking the shelves. Can you track those losses? Can you determine where our merchandise is being lost from and how to solve it?

If an employee is taking cash, you obviously will have a very specific dollar loss that you will be looking at. What about the other losses? How about your time? How much time will you lose researching those losses? Do you know how to track your cash shortages and not only figure out which employee (or employees) is stealing from you? Will that theft case hold up in court or will it be dismissed leaving you open to further litigation?

Fit the Bill – Loss Prevention Seminars

They say that those that can – Do, and those that can’t- Teach.  Sayings like that must have been true at some point to have sustained the momentum to keep the saying alive; however, it isn’t always the case. Take these loss prevention seminars for example. Bill spent years doing, so now he can take his experiences and teach you.

In my experience, to be a successful trainer, you have to spend time honing your skills and your education. It helps you become an expert in your subject matter. It also helps you to comprehensively answer the questions that might arise during a Loss Prevention Workshop.

How would you expect someone to be able to answer questions on how to interview an employee theft case if they had never conducted an interview before? Never Gets Old – Loss Prevention Seminars

My two year old has recently started taking an interest in cartoons; both on the computer and on the TV. As a new parent, I was totally against it at first. My child simply should not be in front of anything so bad as a tv, for whatever reason. But after looking at what is available to her I started to change my mind, especially after seeing so many Loss prevention seminars.

While at first it might seem like that is a completely obscure reference point, Let me take a moment to explain. The shows that my daughter is most drawn to are ones that she was learning from. There were colors and numbers, songs to sing and things to learn about. This was a way to in essence begin to give her the world – begin her love of learning.

She needs to be exposed to the things the world has created and has to offer. And she needs to have fun while learning. That is where I made the connection with Loss prevention seminars.

Making Friends – Loss Prevention Workshop

While you can never find it on a syllabus or meeting agenda, making contacts is  one of my favorite parts of attending a loss prevention workshop.

Attending loss prevention seminars provides an opportunity to have an open conversation on this topic. If you have worked retail for any span of time, you will most likely come across a shoplifter or an employee theft situation. Even if you didn’t see the shoplifter, you were probably aware of their presence in your store at some point.

Loss prevention training gives you a chance to talk about your experiences with theft. How you handled it, maybe something that you started that worked, and maybe something that didn’t work.

Other attendees have a chance to regale their stories as well. That’s one of the best parts of a workshop.  The informal training allows you to learn from each other’s hands on experiences. I have always felt that most attendees learn more from these impromptu discussions better than a long drawn out training forum.

There is no need to reinvent the wheel when it comes to loss prevention. Most of the tactics used by or to prevent shoplifters are pretty universal. It is just a matter of being aware of them and knowing how to apply them to your store.

Go Ahead, Have Some Fun – Loss Prevention Seminar

Let’s face it, lectures are boring- especially ones that have to be conducted by someone else’s department. For many store employees that are faced with the task of attending loss prevention seminars, they might feel like they are in for an extremely boring presentation about information that either doesn’t apply to them, or have a practical use for.

In some cases, that might be true. There are many presenters for loss prevention training that drone on incessantly about building employee theft cases or how to stop shoplifting. Neither of which may apply to your average store employee.

A good presenter, however, will give ways to spot shoplifting, and how customer service can prevent shoplifting. A good loss prevention workshop will also give ways to prevent employee theft before it happens through operational controls and awareness.

By making the subject matter relevant to the audience, your employees are more likely to walk away from the presentation with useful knowledge that they can actually apply.

There is nothing worse than sitting through a training program and discounting the presentation as it is going on. I think we have all been there, hoping to find a way to take a suggested method and apply it, all the while knowing that the criteria or resources do not apply to your specific situation.

Good For You – Loss Prevention Seminars

Attending loss prevention seminars is a good business decision that every manager or owner should make at some point in his or her career. It will provide valuable insight into ways you can reduce your losses. When you attend good loss prevention training, it is hard to know who will walk away with more – you or your employees. They will also give you a heads up on ways that both employee theft and shoplifting can occur.

I would encourage you to take your complete staff with you to a loss prevention workshop so they can benefit from the same information that you are getting. It will help their awareness of common losses that can occur in a retail setting.

It will be nice for you after the training is completed because you will have an open line of communication with your employees. By discussing some of the things you learned with your employees, they may feel more open about coming to you with concerns they have, or things that they have seen. Some of the best information I have received about losses has come directly from my employees.

These might be things like shoplifting or employee theft that they were uncomfortable talking to you about before. These open lines of communication provide you with additional eyes and ears on the pulse of your business.
